Trying something new

I understand why Trey and Matt may have wanted to try something new after 19-20 years of doing the same thing. However, do you think after a couple seasons of this nonsense they will go back to having good, individual episodes again after getting the whole "trying something new" thing out of their system?

P.S. if you're someone who thinks current South Park is as good as it has ever been, I'm really not interested in arguing with you about that, so please refrain from responding.

I think the current South Park is as good as its ever been. They ran out of material for individual episodes. Instead they decided to make season long arcs based on the current mood of the country and its been very refreshing. The comedy now is coming less from classic absurdity and more from striking a nerve with the audience (the old "its funny cause its true" routine)

The show had always been about using poop jokes to make a point about social issues. Now there are more social issues and less poop jokes. I can see how someone who is only in it for the poop jokes can be frustrated, but for the rest of us it is a welcome change of pace for a show that was starting to get stale.

I saw it and ignored it.

And no they won't get it out of their system. Its more likely that the episodic seasons are "out of their system". If anything Parker and Stone will find a new angle for the show in a few years or finally dump it for a new idea altogether. ( I doubt the latter is likely either - the South Park universe is too versatile)

Was it "put me on ignore?" I can't check because you are on ignore.

If you're not interested in arguing, why are you still arguing?

I'm not arguing. Did I argue?

Restricting the discussion to just those people who dislike the season, or see it as inferior to past seasons, is rather ridiculous. It's completely valid for someone to prefer the story arc format.

I'd like to see them do a one-off episode now and again, but I doubt it will happen. I expect if we do get something resembling a one-off, it will be stitched into the overall storyline in one way or another.

I never said it wasn't valid for someone to prefer this format. I just wanted to have a discussion with people who have the same view of the show as I do. If I can't do that here, where else can I do it?

reply

I don't know go into one of the already existing threads discussing their dislike of the serialized format?

reply

It can't last. To some extent they will change back.

Firstly I don't like it.

Secondly you can't watch it casually, if you only watch a few episodes they won't make sense. You have to watch the whole season. You have to be a fan.

Thirdly you can't watch it socially. Southpark was something you could share with friends over a few beers or joints. Now there will be to many in jokes so outsiders cannot enjoy it.

Fourthly they're not good at it. The big suspense of this season should have been the trolls identity. The townspeople could have been accusing each other for half the season. Instead they gave it away in the first episode.

Popularity is falling. Torrent sites like Piratebay don't have this seasons episodes up. that shows it's mass appeal much more accurately than forum discussion.

The first two episodes were great, but now it's starting to veer off the rails a bit. I wish they could stick more to satirizing Clinton and Trump.

south park is as good as ever fck your opinion

 Well played!

Yeah. That Harvard education obviously paid off for him.

I think season 18/19 was a great mix of the two. Maybe not the best episodes throughout but i liked the overarching story, but the episodes were still individual. This current season is the only fully serialized one. The last two while there was an ongoing story you could still watch an individual episode and it'd be complete.

reply

I dunno about that, you would miss out on a lot of detail in season 19 without keeping up to date with the episode order. Season 18 being a good balance between individual and continuity I agree with.
