The show should have been called the Multi-Racial Friends. You had a goth chick, a black guy, and hispanic, and for good measure a cripple. I'm guessing the producers, writers, and etc. wanted to show how modern they were by making the team so diverse. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if being a Ghostbuster didn't rely so much on mobility.

I'm probably the only one who's gunna say this, but the guy in the wheelchair was my fave character. :-)

reply

Mine too! I was so disappointed when the action figures came out and there was no Garrett! I was like, "Man, but he was my favorite!"

I read in an interview, that the reason they put him in a wheelchair, was because he was the stereotypical leader, sports, coolguy, and they wanted to make him more interesting.

Read the full interview it's pretty interesting.

Not to mention the last 2 episodes having the orginal guys with the new guys. :P

In that case, they should've just gave him asthma. They would've made him a vulnerable, yet still practical GB. Or gave him a heart condition, or cancer, or something. ANything but a wheelchair. From a relaistic point of view, there's no way he could be a gb in a wheelchair.

By any means necessary.

I like Garrett but I agree putting him in a wheelchair was a dumb idea.

reply

i also like garret, it is wasnl;t for the chip on his shoulder. once again a show that had great potential but never managed to realise it

The other problem is that there is a girl ghostbuster.
On top of that she is into the goth look.
On top of that she is a smart physics loving kind of chick.

Now that makes the show fun to watch.

The wheelchair guy made me feel bad for handicaps.

reply

I hate this show, i thought it was the complete bastardization of the ghostbusters, it seemed it was all just a P.C. think tank job. Anyway, in the pilot episode the guy in a wheelchair "picked" the firehouse door by rolling into it backwards!
I once visited the real GB firehouse in NY and for the record a wheelchair won't burst through those doors, let that be a lesson to anyone thinking of trying it! :P

LOL! Yeah, I thought that was stupid too.

By any means necessary.

Definitely.

Sure he was an athlete and all, but the thing is, although people in wheelchairs play basketball, they play against OTHER people in wheelchairs. I could live with the hispanic dude and the goth chick, but having a guy in a wheelchair in what is about as dangerous as police force is totally unrealistic. Since when was the last time anyone saw a guy in a wheelchair as a fireman or a soldier?

reply

C'mon, this is a cartoon about people catching colourful ghosths into that little yellow plate-thing, what IS real here? Garrett has been my favorite charachter ever since I started watching the show when I was like eight. I think it's genious, there are so many things you can do with that, not to mention all the jokes they can come up with about that chair. And to be all cliched, he IS a huge role model for paralyzed young kids that their life isn't over.

Guard the boat, mind the tide... Don't touch my dirt.

reply

Garrett was always my favorite character, too. Is this show still playing anywhere, or did it ever come out on DVD?

reply

Well I actually hated Garrett. He came off obnoxious and the fact that he was in a wheelchair tripled that feeling. A few more characters would have nice.

Look up PARAPSYCHOLOGIST, genius. Or Parapsychology. How about Hans Holzer. Ever hear of him? He's the real life Egon Spangler. He's the first to treat parapsychology like an authentic science outside of The society of Psychical research / American society for psychical research.

Next time, don't assume I'm lying, pal. That's rude and presumptuous.

I know this is an old thread but I've been a Ghostbusters fan since the eighties and I watched every adaptation of the animated series. It's part of what inspired my educational path. I took a course in Astrology / Parapsychology with the Stratford Career Institute, mostly for the fun of it. Technically I'm a parapsychology councilor...

Oh, yeah and I AM legally blind (My left eye is entirely blind though I CAN see). So you just kind of hit a nerve with me. I guess I should go back to that Vision impaired program they tried to shove me into back in High School and learn Braile because God knows anyone whose imperfect is unrealistic for investigating the paranormal!

I guess I should tell Stephen Hawking it's unrealistic for him to have the world's highest IQ because he's wheelchair bound and to stop writing his theories on time travel.

Thank you for telling me my EXISTANCE is unrealistic. You know, the more I type, the angier I'm getting...

I'm going back to The Dresden Files forum...

reply

I don't have anything against Garrett, he was a good addition to the series, and like someone else pointed out in this thread, the character was a role model to paralyzed kids too. I would like to add more stuff, but I'm kind of tired and annoyed to hear all this about a character that isn't the protagonist in this cartoon.

IMDb message boards, you'll never find a more wretched hive of pessimism and racism.

Thank you!

It looks like you're the only parapsychology councilor google has ever heard of. Congratulations, I've never seen one person monopolize a position like that, no matter how ridiculous it is.

reply

I know this is an old thread but I've seen JTheGoblinKing overreacting about so many God damned things on these boards that I feel compelled to say this.

Grow up.

Jesus Christ, look how much you're flipping out over nothing.

These people are complaining about a Token character who outshines all the others - to the point of being obnoxious - in a pretty blatant attempt to be "politically correct." It's Tokenism. And they raise the legitimate point that in a physically intensive field like Ghostbusting, being less than entirely and fully physically capable is a disadvantage.

The army would turn him down. That's a fact. And they'd do it because of the exact same reasons as I said.

It's not bigoted to state the truth.

Now, I've put way more thought into this than I feel like I probably should have, but still. Just quit it. Your melodrama started off as funny, but now it's just ridiculous.

I thought the guy in a wheelchair was kind of dumb too.
