Padme should have a boyfriend/fiancé character in the beginning of Episode II to have someone for Anakin to compete with for her affection. Padme could show that she likes Anakin but realizes that they cannot be together because she is already in a serious relationship. Towards the end of the movie the boyfriend character could be injured during the battle of Geonosis and Anakin could go to his aide but kill him and make it look like his death was caused by his battle injuries so he can have Padme all to himself. It could be a great way to show Anakin's slip to the dark Side and his desperation to be with Padme.

Perhaps Padme should have hooked up with Obi-Wan during Phantom Menace? Anakin was too young, so he was out of the picture then. it would also give something to feed into Anakin's distrust of Obi-Wan (ie jealousy) in episode 3 (even if it's not true).

Yeah, had they set up a situation were Anakin maybe incorrectly suspects that Obi wan and Padme had a closer than friends relationship it might have made his turn and anger towards obi wan believable. The somewhat implies that as Palpatine tells Anakin of a certain Jed's late visits to Padme's apartment when Anakin wasn't around.

That would have been cliched, we've seen it happen a lot, and a big part of the point of the movie is that, like Anakin, Padme had pretty much been putting her personal life and wants aside to focus on duty and the common good for a long time.

and Anakin could go to his aide but kill him and make it look like his death was caused by his battle injuries so he can have Padme all to himself.

That would have been too jerky too soon and without a noble or tragic rationale.

I disagree. I think she should be like Princess Leia, apparently so dedicated to her work that she doesn't have any time for a boyfriend, not that she knew any boys her age who could match her for genius and maturity. So I think the mention of a past kiss was enough, it indicated that although she's got to time for a man in her life, she's still straight.

And if you ever want to write an AU fan fiction, introduce a brilliant boyfriend, and have Anakin's jealousy send him over to the Dark Side a bit early.
