Where is Trunks's tail?

Did he ever have any?

reply

As a Saiyajin he should have had one, but most likely was taken from him, however after a time the tail starts to grow back on.

I've watched a VHS Dragon Ball Z Special "Televikko" and also Trunks didn't have a tail.

The quality is quite messed up on this VHSRip, because the encoder used his settings which aren't very good.

Trunks is half-saiyan, not full-blooded saiyan, so I always assumed he simply did not have one. Being half-human half-saiyan, he basically had a 50/50 chance of carrying on the "tail gene," so to speak, and apparently he did not.

That doesn't mean that he wouldn't have other saiyan traits that would be dominant rather than recessive, however. Other saiyan traits he may have exactly like his father.

I always assumed it was cut off when he was born.

You might as well ask "How come Goten didn't have a tail either?"

As was mentioned earlier, Trunks and Goten were hybrids (50% Saiyan, 50% Human). Not all hybrids have the tail. In fact, for all we know, it might be a rare phenotype for hybrids to have. In Dragonball Z, of the three hybrids we have seen (Gohan, Goten, and Trunks) only one them had a tail. So maybe the trait is very rare.

To speak on another level about this subject, Toriyama probably stopped giving characters tails when he realized that they would serve no purpose in the continuing story. Gohan had a tail, during the Vegeta saga, but it played heavily into the story. The later sagas did not involve Ape transformations to propel the story, but rather transforming into Super Saiyans. You didn't need a tail to become Super Saiyan, so tails had no practical use in the DBZ universe anymore. So Toriyama just did away with them.

COME NOT BETWEEN THE DRAGON AND HIS WRATH

reply

ehh Theres zero proof that not all hybrids have tails. Based on the destruction witnessed when Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan transformed, I think they would have sense enough to remove it. All in all though, its left up to the viewers to decide. Its not really a big deal.

reply

Actually I think many of the fans believe that when Goten/Trunks were born, Vegeta and Goku had already had their tails permanently removed. That's why they weren't born with it.

reply

If Goku and Vegeta had their tails permanently removed, they would still carry the genetic information for a tail and pass it on to their offspring. The most likely explanation is that they were removed.

reply

The answer is probably because they didn't need it for the story anymore, but yeah its kind of a loose end.

Where did vegetas tale go never mind? He got it cut off but it never came back, piccolo pulled gohans out from the root and it still came back. I don't see vegeta having it removed like goku either, he was proud of is sayian blood.

Maybe after a certain age it doesn't grow back like in Vegeta's case, sort of like our teeth, children can regrow teeth but adults cant.

And yeah, Vegeta would never allow Trunks tail to be surgically removed permanently even if Bulma wanted to, likely answer is he probably wasn't born with one, so was Goten (unless momzilla Chichi didn't like tails and with Goku absent...snip*snip*)

what are you lookin at..[fight2]

reply

I may be wrong, but I understand that neither Trunks nor Goten (nor Bra) were born with a tail (unlike Gohan) because they were conceived when their fathers had already achieved the Super Saiyajin state.

I cannot remember if I've read that on a old issue of Shônen Jump, though.
