Monday 24 08 'Embarrassed by my Race'
Today we will meet men and women who don't identify with the race they were born into. They feel uncomfortable with their ethnic looks and even try to pass for another race. We'll meet a black woman, Shelley, who despises her own race. When she looks in the mirror she refuses to see a black woman. She says black people are "ghetto". Shelley will not date a black man because she fears reproducing a child of her race. She has undergone multiple plastic surgeries so she can look less black. We'll also meet an Asian woman, Kyounga, who had Asian blepharoplasty (Asian eyelid surgery) so she could look more western. After years of being teased and called "chinky," she believes the surgery will make her more attractive. Dr. Lee, who performed the surgery on her, will show us her procedure. David is a bi-racial man, who was born to a black father and Israeli mother. He has passed as a white man for years. He felt that being white meant that he would have everything that he wanted in life and being black would hinder that.
