To those who complain endlessly about the Senate Meetings

You do realize that it's maybe 4 minutes of film and they spend roughly 10 minutes on Correscant. Plus it was established in A New Hope that there was once a Republic and there was once a senate, this takes place decades before A New Hope so what the hell did you expect?

Caroooooooscant?
Ok cut, let's do it again.

I like the story line of the prequels especially the concept of crooked trade deals, but I think the way they show the senate is too worldly. There is a thread on one of the boards for one of the new Star Wars movies that complains about champagne and swear words. The senate meetings do not bear even abstract resemblance to reality. Do you know what diplomats do? I saw one the other day. It was a young woman drive to a fancy hair salon by two helpers in a Mercedes S class. They parked illegally on the curb in front along a busy street, and waited for her there for hours. I had been walking down the street at the time. Diplomats do not have to obey traffic laws and they are given lavish accommodations. They do not work and certainly don't engage in intellectual debate for no reason.

But the politics and Senate stuff were part of the core of the story!

Because the prequel films weren't really about the adventures of two young idiots, they were about how democracy dies.

It was 4 very boring minutes, though!

it's the kind of world building that the sage needed. Probably too much for the non-cerebral fans, but there was only one single senate scene - and contrary to what these people claim, they did not discuss taxes and trade tariffs, but the occupation of Naboo by a buiness organization.

This was an essential scene as it showed how Palpatine corrupted and manipulated even the good elements to damage each other (blocking of Valorum's decisions, vote of no confidence). And how he managed to make himself chancellor by playing the victim-card and using the sympathy-bonus of having his home world invaded.

It's the beginning of the end for the republic and it's institutions - you can hear it in final scene's boy choir too as they sing to Palpatines theme in major.

reply

Exactly it was essential to the plot and it established how Palpatine was manipulating the government to rise to power.

What is very interesting is in all 3 Dark Knight movies there is a board meeting scene where people are just "sitting and talking" and I have never heard an ounce of complaining about any of those.

yes, and many of the classics have senate or sit-around scenes (especially Ancient Rome stuff); many classic stories' and myths' central conflicts originate from taxation of routes (Robin Hood), as we see with historic wars and civil wars. Thats not a bad thing, just a relevant one.

Actually, for me the rise of Palpatine and him destroying the Republic is one of the most interesting aspects to Star Wars - and still that was one of the main bitching points of prequel hatred "Iz does not make no sense". Personal incredulity is a bitch.

reply

Not to mention both The Godfather and The Godfather Part II have multiple scenes of people just "sitting and talking" and those are considered to be 2 of the greatest films of all time.

In all honesty I think at some point it became the "cool thing" to hate the prequels so people just invent things to bitch about. I'm not saying they're perfect, they aren't, they are just very unfairly nitpicked which the Disney films seem to get a free pass.

reply

I agree with you that people have been unfair to the prequels. I actually enjoy the prequels more than the OT. Some would call that blasphemy, but there it is.

The story, to me, just feels much richer and I enjoy seeing the galaxy when it is still flourishing and not in a state of decay.

With social media and the internet, there is always going to be complainers voicing their opinions usually a lot more vociferously than people that were satisfied with something. Like they say "Opinions are like assholes - they're usually full of shit"
