I didn't think it was a horrible movie. It was pretty good, although the little scene where Cale and the captain go out into space and are still alive without spacesuits somewhat ruined the movie for me.

Actually, what they did is entirely possible. You can survive in a complete vaccuum for at LEAST 15 seconds. You don't explode, but you have to completely exhale or you'll damage your longs. You'll flatulate a bit too, and it's not painful either, although it's uncomfortable. As long as you can expell CO2, you won't feel like you're suffocating - your body triggers off from CO2 levels in the blood to induce you to inhale - your body couldn't care less if there is any O2 in there at all which is why it's so easy to kill yourself with CO and NO2..

BTW, it was a method of "euthanasia" used in animal shelters for quite some time. It was abolished because invariably the animal would panic in the vaccuum. The lady that got this method abolished was a complete wacko by the way, but she accomplished something positive by eliminating this method.

Also: Didn't you ever see 2001 ? There is a mistake in 2001 though, Dave Bowman INHALES and holds his breath before he blows the pod door, Arthur C. Clarke should have known better, he's not the genius he claims to be.

Really...wow. I just learned something today, and it wasn't from one of my boring-ass college classes.

I know a lot of people were disgusted by the cuteness factor, but it didn't bother me a bit. Would have been interesting to have a very cuddly cute loveable villan though :) That's taboo though, and will likely never be done.

Actually- although its been quite a while since I read 2001- I seem to recall that Bowman does what he was supposed to do so the film was flawed not by Clarke, but by Kubrick. I suppose he (Stanley) felt it necessary to impart to the viewer the enormity of what Bowman was about to do by having him take and hold a deep breath. Guess it's that "poetic license" thing again.

No they wouldn't.. Space is cold, but in vacuum heat don't have that many places to go. You don't become a popsicle after 15 seconds. They would be freezing but there wouldn't be enough time to get frozen. The freestyle space walk they did is entirely plausible.

Not actually Clarkes fault as he gets it right in a lot of hid older fiction.
A lot of which was written back when most authors assumed that people would just explode in vaccum.
Its more likely an editing goof that they failed to pick up on!

Acually SpeedRacer, the human body can stay in a vacuum for up to 15 seconds so since they weren't in space nearly that long they could've survived.

Contrary to standard Science Fiction, exposure to vaccuum will not kill you instantly. AFAIK humans have survived vacuum for up to 20 seconds. According to NASA papers, survival should be possible if the recrompression occures whithin 90 seconds.

reply

rumor has it that you can survive for about 30 sec in the vacume of space if you have a lung-full of air. or something. i don't think we've ever tested it. why don't you be the first.

reply

How did that ruin it for you? If that bothered you, have fun watching Event Horizon.

reply

The human body is able to sustain life for up to 30 seconds (give or take) in outer space, according to what we know about the unprotected environment that space, without a spacesuit, is. Unbelievable? Absolutely not.

reply

You can survive in space without a suit for brief amount of time. Seeing as how there were no nearby stars, it probably wasn't too hot and probably not too radioactive. Also there might be some sort of shield/barrier around that entire complex seeing as how it was just drifting.

reply

It's pretty much an accepted scientific fact that you CAN survive in outer space without a suit for at least a minute.

The only thing I might have a problem with in that scene is that their bodies weren't damaged in the slightest from the exposure. But, hey, it's an animated kids movie so I let it slide. ;D

You can survive in space for a short period of time as long as you have empty lungs, closed eyes, and are only exposed for seconds. Once you return to an atmosphere you should be in a lot of pain as your blood stops boiling.

* SPOILER AHEAD *

The only reason I didn't like this movie was because the plot is completely circular. The Drej blow up the planet of Earth to try to destroy the Titan, thereby forcing Earthlings to use the Titan to kill the Drej.

It's such a horribly huge plothole it just ruins it. The visuals were AMAZING though. When Earth was being destroyed, it was quite impressive. I liked the artwork very much too. I wanted to like this movie, but what HACK in HollyWood decided on this STUPID PLOT???

reply

Actually, I think this movie has one flaw, and it's not the plotline, because this is supposed to be light entertainment, and you shouldn't look for more than that.
The flaw is - in my humble opinion - the gruesome soundtrack. A John Williams-esque soundtrack would have added to the magic and general feel of the movie, while this college-rock crap totally disassembles the mood every ten minutes. It makes the atmosphere of the story plummet, and inspires people to look for other flaws...

Methinks.

reply

Actually, I think this movie has one flaw, and it's not the plotline, because this is supposed to be light entertainment, and you shouldn't look for more than that.

What? You can't have a good believable logical plot in light entertainment? Some of the best sci fi plots have come out of the Twilight Zone, and that was light entertainment. The plot was just horrible to me. I think they were trying to be artistic by closing the loop, but the problem is that it's entirely illogical. The Drej deserved to be destroyed not because they were evil, but because they were stupid.

BTW there is already a readily available energy source in space, it's called the sun. The amount of energy the sun produces in a second, and radiates into space uselessly, is more energy than human civilization has used throughout it's entire existence. Only a very small fraction of the sun's energy hits the planet Earth. Humans would never need to use the Drej.

Tell me, why would somebody make an INTENTIONALLY unbelievable plot? What is the point of that? To me, it's just a screwup and such a collosal one, it ruined the film.

I can't believe for a second that the script writer intentionally did this, made an illogical plot. I think the scriptwriter was just stupid.

"I don't remember the music at all".

Well, good for you. I guess it's like taking a really bad dump; after a while you don't notice the smell anymore.

Music is rarely memorable to me. 99% of it is crap, so to speak.

reply

I really liked this film, but don't remember the soundtrack either. Isn't the point of a soundtrack to blend in with the film? If the soundtrack was amazing, you'd be distracted from the film?

So not remembering the soundtrack would be a good thing?

I thought the film was good, but agree that using the drej for energy was a bit stupid. There were quite a few parts of the film involving the drej that were weak (the part where he escapes from the drej prison with cunning use of his fingers!). Was there only one Drej ship? Was that the the whole Drej civilisation? Given that their ships were killed so easily with such a small gun as they had at the end, its slightly unbelievable they could have wiped out the earth with just the one ship.

And if there are more, what's stopping them from coming back and destroying Planet Bob?

So many questions, I'm starting to see why you people think its a bad film. (How did that wee speccy four eyes alien survive the explosion? Did anyone else want to flush his head down the toilet?)

But I did enjoy it at the time. Did anyone think it was really necessary to have so many shots of the guys arse when he was being healed?

reply

I agree with you on most points, one thing however;

quote:

"wee speccy four eyes" was the best character in the entire movie. I thought the funniest part of the movie was when he had invented something in his sleep, and wondered what the button on it was for.

No one could survive in space for a single second, its -300*C out there, ur body would be frozen in a micro second. Also Arthur C Clark wrote the book 2001, Stanley Kubrick directed the film, blame him for the error.

Vacuum doesn't have a temperature. Your heat loss would be minimal. Expanding gas in your body would make you lose some, but not a lot.

reply

Vacuum doesn't have a temperature. Your heat loss would be minimal. Expanding gas in your body would make you lose some, but not a lot.

im not 100% sure on this but from what i already know, i agree
temperature doesnt exist in a vacuum. heat is a form of energy, and it moves from one piece of matter to another. as far as i know it is the spinning speed of the atoms of the matter.

when you lose heat, IE by going outside when its cold, your body heat is being transfered to the cold air.

if you were in a vacuum, there would be nowhere for your heat to go, so it would probably not be sucked away. it would probably diminish at a steady rate that would be more than countered by the heat your body generates

an inanimate object, on the other hand, if left alone in space, would probably continue to decrease in temperature until reaching a stopping point somewhere in the -200's. (not including gaining heat from the sun or other source). a good example of this is Pluto.

if you were to stand naked on Pluto, you would freeze to death instantly, since the huge ball of -250*C gas would suck the tiny wisp of warmth from your body. this is assuming there is even an atmosphere on pluto

anyways.......
sorry for the lecture...
i think i like physics too much, even though what i said above is mostly educated guessing

reply

since im picky i really must point out that there IS no such temperature as -300*C

absolute zero is -273*C
this is the coldest possible temperature (although virtually impossible to reach)
at this temperature atoms have slowed to a point where they stop spinning

gah you people... the drej thought they were getting rid of a threat by destroying the humans. they didnt realise they were ensuring their own destruction. they knew somehow that humans would destroy them one day, so they thought that by taking them out before they actually pose a threat that they could avert dooms day, when in fact they ended up triggering it. also, how would the drej know that the titan could absorb the energy from their weapon?

reply

nice thread o.O

reply

The plotline was actually well done, thank you very much.

and the flaw wasn't music. If you don't happen to like that genre of music, don't take it out on the movie yeah? The music patched pretty well, in my opinion, to the feel of the movie, particular the scene with the wake angels (though, can someone explain to me the micro-novas whenever they hit the clouds?). The intro song as good too, "Cosmic Castaway", which matched very well with the Cale's position in the 'verse.

I will admit, however, that the music was... rather obvious, the scenes going from background noise to rock just didn't work as well as it could have...

But I don't believe the flaw was plot or music. I agree with who ever stated that this movie would have been better had it been geared towards a more adult audience. It was, however, a good movie.

reply

The plot isn't circular. It's more "poetic justice" in the end for the Drej. Besides, they weren't really killed. The Drej was converted into usable energy to power the Titan. Techically, they're still alive, but there is no Drej consciousness left. This isn't a stupid plot at all. In fact, it's much better than the sci fi crapola we're getting now. And the Drej didn't blow up the planet because of the Titan, but because they were afraid of what humans could become if their technology advances farther. It's like the smarter we get, the more dangerous we become.

reply

They wern't trying to destroy Titan they were trying to destroy all humans. Also it makes perfect sense because Humans knew that the Drej wanted them dead so they made a failsafe, a ship that could make a planet, but they were to late and the Drej armada attacked. The Drej knew the Titan escaped so they wanted it so humanity could never again have a strong defensive position...a planet. As lone drifting colonies humans wern't a threat.

reply

I think we all need to be honest. We wanted this movie to be good. Lord knows we did. I did. The dialogue was great, the characters had personaity, but then, it came down to the plot.

** SPOILERS **

The visuals of the movie were great. NO denying that. But what sucked? the cookie cutter, seen it 50 million times plot.

Let me just list a few things that p*ssed me off:

1. the 'my dad left me' hang up. Dude, you're what? 20. GET OVER IT!! The repeated "my dad's gone" "i'm gonna leave like my dad" "my dad left me" "you found me at least, more than my dad did for me", ok, we GET IT, don't need to DRIVE It on home. Seriously. We get it now. SHUT UP.

2. the 'instant' love. God that's so annoying and sucks. They don't gotta not fall in love, but if you are gonna go through so much trouble to make the characters move human, look human, behave human, how about going for broke?

3. the bad guy. Dude, can you say 'borg', one thing that I didn't like, the fact that he could drive the Dje ship. Now, I'm not saying that he shouldn't be able to, but i found it a bit too weird that there was a SEAT in the ship. THey are energy, why they need a seat? hell, I thought they were apart of their own ship. you know. I just thought that part was a bit ... yeah.

but at least they were original in the fact that they got him back. The movie started out 'very' well, but ended rotten.

4. how the HECK did they rebuild a space ship in a matter of what seemed to be HOURS. I'll assume it was longer than hours, but it's a ship my friend. I don't see anyone being able to piece it back together toot-sweet.

and last but not least

the betrayal at the end. Ok. didn't see that comming, but if you are gonna make the once good guy into a bad guy, don't convert him back into a good guy again. it's been done ten million times and it's lame... real lame.

reply

3. the bad guy. Dude, can you say 'borg'

PuLEASE!

Does everyone have to cry Borg every time we see any kind of cybernetic implants from now on???

Ya know, ST was NOT the first series to ever use cybernetics or hive minds or ANY of that crap.

Except for ST:OS (and even then some) the whole entire franchise was hugely derivative and even fed off ITSELF many times.

Or do you mean Drej = Borg?

Sorry. Don't see it. Not even a little.....

As someone who loves the movie, I'll try to explain why I thought these plot points worked.

1. His dad left when he was five. He viewed this as being abandoned. There are a lot of people around today who have a parent who left them, and many of them (especially those who were close to the parent before they died/left) are bitter about this. At that age, being abandoned like that is nothing short of a betrayal. It takes finding what his father had been doing all this time (leading the Drej away from Cale, who he had left his life's work with) to forgive him.

2. She's the first human female he's seen in YEARS. Add to that that she's presumably not bad looking, and of COURSE there's going to be attraction, assuming they're both straight, which they apparantly were. If all else, it's a biological imperative to continue the species in light of their near-extinction. And their personalities do compliment each other. He wants to make ships, she wants to fly them.

3. Granted, this is something I gleaned from the novelization, but Cale was apparantly always good at figuring out how things work. This is hinted at in the movie when he keeps fixing things like Gune's map. And yeah, I'll admit that the whole "They fly the ship despite being made out of the same stuff" thing was a bit odd, but it's a MOVIE, and there are things called PLOT DEVICES in even the best ones to ensure that things go how they're supposed to.

4. It was actually over two days that they fixed up the ship. Again, info from the novelization, but the ship's owner who lived in it kept it fairly ready to go, as he was always hopeful that the Titan (which had become something of a legend) had been found. And being an older design than some of the other ships used to make the drifter colony, it didn't fit as well with the rest, making detatching it that much easier. Add to that several other people with at least a bit of knowledge on what to do and how to make it work, and this gets done in less time.

5. I thought Korso's betrayal and redemption worked rather well. Korso is a realist. He knows the Titan exists, and after a few years of being ground down and suddenly given an opportunity by the Drej, he takes it. After Cale tries to save him from falling, his eyes are basically opened to the fact that they're in the Titan and might actually have a chance. He seizes that chance and tries to right what he's done. And he dies atoning for it. It's a lot like Boromir, in a way.

Anyway, I hope that helped clarify some points.

hey people!

i just wanted to say that i thought this movie was exellent, though i didn't see it at the movies. i am completely obsessed with it.

i love the voices of the characters, and how the characters look and move. i love the art, and am a fan of 2d animation (i really want to be an animator)

overall i just loved the rough space explorers feel to it. the music is catchy and the lyrics actually relate to parts of the story for example:

bliss-not quite paradise
"though its not quite paradise, it sure feels like home."

and "i'll call you up and say, we made it okay."

i also love cosmic castaway (hehe)

anyway i am sad to hear that fox animation studio was closed, i think they have potential. and i also wanted to add:

i think reviewers SUCK. they are too afraid to say a movie rocked because it wont b original or whatever. we need younger reviewers who will happily embrace the fact that every movie is originall, please stop comparing sci-fi movies to star wars and stargate and etc.

our tv guide movie reviewer is now in my good books cause he gave the movie a 3 star outta 5. which is good considering he gives all the othas like 1 star. mwaaaa!!

anyways i could say more but i think im ranting lol, but i just wanna say i love this movie sooooo much.
