The Drej is an A.I.

I'm adding more thoughts to this. I've mentioned this elsewhere but wanted to post as a new thread too for more discussion.

I think specifically the Drej were an AI policing the universe and somehow Earth gaining the ability to make planets was a big fat no no.......

But that wouldn't make sense because surely there were other races more advanced then Earth in this movie, but perhaps the Drej nuke any race that gets too advance as per their policing role. Keeping the universe on some kind of even tech level......

reply

Yeah it's completely possible that someone created the Drej and lost control over them. I don't see how an energy race such as the Drej are capable of beginning on their own accord - being 100% energy whilst every other species is clearly organic.

reply

Just think of the Drej as Gort made of energy but somehow they got out of control and over stepped their original programming

reply

Sounds completely in the realm of possibility to me. As far as we know, since they are energy beings they did not have a natural creation (no possibility of evolution from earlier life) and must have been created by an organic species.

The Drej would have had a very interesting back story

Not true. For all we know they're like the Ancients in the Star Gate universe. Beings who shed their physical forms and became beings of pure energy.

True, but uas pesky humans showed them what for........ :)

Mind you there's still that Drej ship in the cargo bay of the Valkeryie... I guess if one part survives they could rebirth...

reply

I don't know about the Drej being an A.I. makes me think of that one Futurama episode were the Professor created some kind of nanobots that evolve on a planet each day until they evolved beyond their physical forms.

But that could be true about the Drej, but I always thought of them as a race like the Vorlons and the Shadows and other First Ones from Babylon 5, they were around for Eons that they evolved from their physical form into a pure energy based form like the First Ones did.

As for that spare Drej fighter in the cargo bay of the Valkeryie that you think might regenerate the whole Drej race, I doubt it's still there, Korso must've disintegrated that thing and I doubt that one fighter could respawn all of the Drej.

But another way I can think of were the Drej can be reborn and make a comeback as a whole is if you read the prequel comics before Earth was destroyed with young Korso and Sam, there was a Drej artifact that was mentioned in the comics called the Orb. Believe it or not, the Queen Drej was not the only Mother Drej in the past. There were two other Mother Drej with her that kinda formed a royal family sort of speak, there was a King Drej and a Prince Drej that ruled along side her in a power circle. The Orb is said to shape the destiny and will of the entire Drej race, all three of them controlled the vast army of Drones using the Orb making them the Hive minds, but the King and Prince were domestically fighting amongst each other and caused the Drones to be in a disarray making them lose plenty of battles to the humans and other races that fought against them. The Queen stuck in the middle was frustrated with the both of them that she took it upon herself to be the sole ruler of the Drej Empire and killed both the King and Prince when they were weaken by absorbing their energy into her own, afterwards she controlled the Orb by herself.

So maybe the Orb survived the disintegration of the Drej Mothership and will probably be the thing that regerates the whole Drej race.

As for the Drej's motives for Destroying the Earth and trying to wipe out all of Humanity. Well it could be the Drej wanted to remain the dominate race in the Galaxy and felt threaten by the human's creativity or they didn't want the humans to evolve more and threaten their dominance. They mention a few things here on this link that sheds a little light on the Drej's motives and maybe their orgin http://www.adherents.com/lit/Na/Na_177.html . Another source in the comics also states that the Drej destroy planets so they can re energize themselves from the energy of a destroyed planet.

reply

Thankyou for that Darklord..... That was interesting.

I had no idea that there were prequel comics before the movie had even come out. Where were they available from?

reply

Well the comics were made by Dark Horse, three issues were made, and also two books about Cale and Akima's storys before the movie, also there was a Titan A.E. The Adult Novelization book based on one of the working scripts of the film so there might be more details in this book that didn't make it into the movie. http://tigrin.net/titanae/merch.html

NOPE they are not A.I they are alien life forms. they had a queen. they are simply energy life forms

Policing the universe for whom and to what end?

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

Policing for their own ends.... To keep on the to; of the food chain

reply

Food chain doesn't apply since beings of pure energy wouldn't need nutrition the same way we do.

And you don't seem to understand what the word policing means. The word implies there are galactic laws and the implication of your statement is that the Drej were tasked with enforcing these galactic laws.

reply

I do understand that and my take on it was that the Drej took it upon themselves to police the universe and wipe out any races they thought a threat to their status.

reply

That isn't "policing." That's more like megalomania. They aren't enforcing laws, they're destroying any perceived enemies.

Not to mention the fact that you said they're AI suggests they were set on this task by some being or at the very least that they were created by some other race of beings.

Not that it really matters because they are not AI. The Queen is an actual intelligent entity, while the drones are subject to her will. Basically they're space ants made of pure energy.

Think of the Drej like the Borg. They are a hive mind race of energy being controlled by their Queen.
