Biggest let-down sequel ever! Haven't watched since 2002

M.I.B was a big deal when it first came out. I can't remember a movie getting as much promotion and publicity before. It seemed to be a universally loved movie as well. An instant classic. Everyone in school loved it. I re-watched it many times when I was younger and still watch it to this day

What a disappointment M.I.B II was. I saw it in the cinemas in 2002 and up to that point it was easily the worst movie I'd seen in the cinemas. To this day I haven't re-watched it. It got hardly any positive reviews. None of the kids at school liked it. I've never heard/read anything positive about it in the years since. Infact, I've hardly heard/read anything about it, period because it was so utterly forgettable. It left no impression.

I'm amazed it even has a rating over 6 on this site. I was expecting it to be in the 4s. Ridiculous that the original isn't even rated 2 points higher.

Who actually likes this movie?

I prefer Men in Black 2 to SpiceWorld: The Movie

reply

Spiceworld is a great movie if you are high.

reply

I love all three of them!!

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

What about Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Iron Man 2, and Blade: Trinity? All of these were very poor sequels. It's not like the Men In Black franchise has some monopoly on bottom-tier sequels.

reply

Or the second Transformers, whatever it was called.

reply

I guess its abit similar to Ghostbusters and Gremlins. Classic original comedy SF film.. with a let down of a sequel 5 years later from same cast/director

I was in my early teens when this movie came out. I left the theater thinking the movie was rushed. Like it starts at 120mhp. There's no build-up.

17 years later and I just did a marathon of the 3 before watching the new one and this is the worst of the bunch. Terrible, unfunny movie.

reply

Well to each their own. I like Men in Black 2. The only reason i can think of that kids might not like it was the romance parts of the story. Otherwise I saw nothing wrong with it compared to part 1. It had good humor and action.

If you mean any sequel at all (as in parts 3, 4 etc) then no way. Many worse. But if you only mean the part 2's out there then there are few that were greater let downs. A few I rank as bigger let downs would be Die Hard 2, Jaws 2, Predator 2, Iron Man 2, and Hangover 2.

MIB 2 really did drop the ball though.

This is a great topic from the OP as I agree 100%. I didn't see any of your list in cinema other than Iron Man 2.

I think what solidified MiB2 as being absolutely horrible is a month after seeing it in cinema I sat through it again on a flight. This was back in the days of one movie for all on flights.

Since then I'd say Anchorman 2 and Inbetweeners 2 are also up there as terrible sequels.

reply

ANCHORMAN 2 IS MORE REPETITIVE AND STUPID THAN IT IS BAD.

reply

I could not sit through Anchorman 2. I was hoping the battle scene would redeem it but I remember it all looking professional compared to the first one. The charm of the first one was how low budget and random it was (man walking through on fire gets me every time).

reply

Die Hard 2 is great. The third one was the letdown, 5 is so bad I don't even count it. The villains were progressing nicely and even continued to after the third film.
Die Hard - Hans was going to blow up the roof and kill everyone.
Die Hard 2 - Colonel Stuart crashes a fully loaded jumbo jet killing everyone on board.
Die Hard 3 - Simon never really put a bomb in the school because "he is not a monster"... LAME.
Die Hard 4 - Gabriel was going to cause a fire sale which would create untold chaos and havoc.

I would love to know why the second one was a letdown to you. Compared to MIB II it is a top-notch sequel.

DH2 had an OK idea but the execution was wretched. One of those movies loaded with poor attention to details and playground levels of sophistication in the directing. Typical Renny Harlan. DH3 was far far better. 4 was pretty good too. We agree on 5.

reply

I agree. Was disappointed that the woman from the first didn't return and that Tommy Lee Jones came back and was a new guy who didn't know anything.
