When the movie begins you can see the orchestra prepairing their instruments. I think they play them all at the same time, probably trying to find the right tune. It turns out to be a beautiful sound. All the instruments making sounds...not really playing anything.
Does this procedure have a name?
I think every orchestra does this before playing anything, but I don't know how it works.
Its just called warming up. many musicians on the stage will run through trouble spots just to make sure they have them ready for the performance.
However, when the concert master come on stage, everybody stops and they tune each section of the orchestra individually (in this order, usually: Woodwinds, Brass, Low Strings, then High strings) to the Principle Oboe. if that's the part your referring to, it's just called Tuning.
