Could've been, should've been, would've been

Another bethwilliam "Could have been, should have been" award.
There are some very good actors in this movie and a brilliant story line.
BUT ..... I think everyone tried too hard.

The key to good comedy, in my humble opinion, is to underplay the punchline.

Still, it scored what it deserved.

You my dear sir are an ass, this movie was hilarious.
There is no way to underplay Daryl Zero. Daryl Zero is larger than life and anything less would have been just common... If I may steal for a minute from the great philosopher Johnny Castle: "nobody puts daryl Zero in the corner" and that is just what you would like to do with you "understatedness" and "tried too hardness"

Shame! Shame on you and your dinky award!
History will vindicate this movie.

That is all!

I think this movie was perfectly played. I don't think you could underplay this script more than was done. It's a rather sedate movie, overall.

Nor do I think it was going for an extreme laugh, though I found it both fascinating and hilarious.

The movie was meant to provoke and to charm, as well as to make people laugh. It did all well and in great balance.

And I agree:

Shame! Shame on you and your dinky award.
Time will out.

I loved your impassioned response to that poster - dinky award - hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I agree wholeheartedly. A delicious little gem of a film.

Why wish for the moon when we can have the stars?

I think the long scenes betweene Bill Pullman and the main actress dragged the movie down. The movie needed fewer of those and more humour and Ben Stiller.

Um, this wasn't a comedy (though it did have some light moments). It was a drama.

It involved rape, murder, infant theft, and blackmail. Almost patricide / killing of one's own daughter. And a father who killed his wife and himself while his 13 year-old son was in the next room.

Your misimpression of the film may be where you went wrong.

I agree in your assessment. I actually loved the "long scenes" between Zero and the woman. I couldn't take my eyes off of them, and she was incredibly intense. Their sexual tension was unlike any other, and it went beyond that--their human being to human being interactions were fascinating.
