Was anybody else upset...

that Edward basically assaulted his sister-in-law...everybody was acting like they had an affair or something. He was bragging on it, like he seduced her. I'm not sure what happened off camera, but it was at least a forced kiss, or worse he actually raped her. Nobody seemed focused on that at all.

Yes. It was really disturbing. I wish that they had somehow indicated that Helene had allowed him to be with her. As it played out, I don't know how his wife could have forgiven him for assaulting a young girl.

I've just watched this. It appears to me that Heloise behaved honorably throughout, and that Edward made a boast to anger his brother that was not founded in fact. His fixation was obvious, but Heloise did not allow him to act on it.

He gropped her while trying to kiss her but there was no rape. His son got a whipping from a girl's brother while feeling her up while dancing. That was sloughed off as well.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

reply

He got strapped for it. So it wasn't "Sloughed off". Unless you feel it necessary to blow it up into some kind of monstrous attack, instead seeing it for what it was; nothing more than a childhood prank.

reply

Are you sure, I thought he did have sex with her.

reply

Well if he did it sure wasn't portrayed in the movie. All that was shown was an attempt at a kiss that was rejected by Heloise.

I agree. That's all I saw: He comes on to Heloise and she rejects him, albeit respectfully. Later, he implies to his brother-in-law that he had sex with her because he's his rival for the estate, but the viewer knows it's a lie. He just did it to anger his rival and cause them problems. It was very ignoble.

Well said. Even Heloise's note said something like 'let's forget what happened and what didn't happen.'

Good additional insight. Thanks. 
