How did this movie even get green-lighted?

The actors are so confused and the story was non-existent. I'm sure Will Smith will regret being in this movie, but I guess the paycheck got him to say, "Yes"! The studio executives must've been drunk out of their mind.

This flick gets bashed a whole lot and I went in with pretty low expectations because of that. And overall I didn't think the movie was that much worse than any Hollywood summer movie. Pretty standard fare.

I own you.

It got the green light because the premise is amazing. A big Steampunk Western action comedy starring Will Smith? Its its the very definition of tentpole Summer movie.

The final product however...

The film is gorgeous, but empty. Great to look at and fun on a basic level, but don't look for deeper themes or complex characterizations.

I loved watching the TV show when I was a child. Great stories. Great concept. I love Will Smith. I adore Kevin Kline. Kenneth Brannaugh is fabulous. Salma Hayek was perfect as the damsel in distress. Ever since I saw the film on its day of release, I have wanted to LOVE it with 100% of my viewer's heart and mind. It is very disturbing to me that even after all these years, I cannot figure out why it was not GREAT. I can honestly say that I really don't think that my expectations were overly high, and the characterizations, costuming, and sets/locations were excellent. So, fellow film fanatics, PLEASE enlighten me, help me, whatever to figure out exactly what was wrong with it?

How did you even look up this board?

After the sucess of the wierd but great Men In Black, the combo of Will Smith, the most bankable star at the time, and director Barry Sonnenfeld, thought, as well as the studio, that this was unfailable. They had totally free hands and was over-confidence. Thats what happened.
