The acting was great in this.

Yes, overall I think it's a bad movie, but I loved the performances. Kenneth Branagh was fantastic as the villain.

reply

Agreed. I don't understand why some people insist that the acting stinks, just because they didn't like the movie. I've seen Oscar caliber performances in some pretty bad movies.

It's NOT a bad movie, let's agree to disagree. But glad you liked Loveless.

reply

Most movies with cr*ppy critical and commercial ratings are rated that way for a reason. This movie sucked. It was supposed to be a fun, western fantasy, but wasn't fun at all. Smith and Kline had zero chemistry together and they had to get stupid and start making racial jokes.

Either just skip it and we can accept Smith as someone who commands respect, or make the racial points but then address them on the whole - that few people, even in the north, had any respect for blacks - even well educated ones.

reply

the constant "ignore the racial thing"

please stop talking....

the movie took place shortly post civil war, and revolved around a former confederate general (who was obviously racist).

the movie focuses around the two agents and them solving the mystery and stopping loveless...

now you either want them to ignore the racial aspect all together, or else jump in it 100% and start exploring the northern attitude towards race etc etc..

please stop posting... it is embarassing

reply

Did you actually have a point, or did you just want everyone to see how stupid you are?

What I said was that they got stupid and started making racial jokes. I'm talking between West and Loveless. There was no need for it. I can accept Smith playing West and just doing what he's doing. He's playing a man with strong character and conviction and is believable in that role.

But then they start with the racial "jokes." They weren't funny.

So, now they have to deal with the elephant in the room, and that is how few actually respected blacks after the Civil War. So, why would he get any slack from anyone, even allies?

The movie sucked.

Now, f$ckoff

reply

maybe because everyone wasnt racist..... im not going to glorify it and say the north was not racist. FAR FROM IT.

but is some nerd Klein about to start being racist with one of the top US marshals in the USA he just saw the president approve of and assign to you and could beat your ass, or be civil? also kleins character was a "learned" man who we are supposed to believe is above that (plus the reasons i mentioned before) who dislikes west more for his violence and rashness and lack of logical thought rather than race.

What I said was that they got stupid and started making racial jokes. I'm talking between West and Loveless. There was no need for it.

even at this racist ball Loveless couldnt kill a governemnt agent in public.. so he tried to strike west with his intelligence and racist slurs. West was proud and "at the top" (as a marshal) working for the US president, yet still ahd to face he was in a country full of racists who ahted him, somethings he could never overcome. it was appropriate and revealing, both of west and lovelesses wit and bitterness

so who else did he get all this slack from??? the president?? west had established himself as a proven man who ahd the presidents trust. the train conductor?? he saw the two agents being "gay" and ignored it.. he wasnt about to start calling people *beep* but was acepting of gays in the 1800s. the spanish lady??? she was desperate for help. who are you talking about??? the other people West encountered in the film were either ALL RACIST or HOSTILE or else we did not see them interact with him (such as at lovelesses ball)

So again, who are you talking about?

You really don't get it. You are putting forth 21st century ideals into 19th century actualities.

Not everyone back then was racist, but that didn't mean they treated most blacks with the same respect they did whites. Gordon may not have called West the "N-word" every 3 minutes, but he wouldn't have spoken to him as an equal. Few would have.

And you somehow think that at the ball Loveless was having, the one with his supporters, that he couldn't have had West killed? You mean like the time they tried to lynch West?

Who exactly would have stopped Loveless from killing West and who exactly would have testified against Loveless for killing West? Hell, who outside of the room would have known he was dead?

thats excatly what you are doing, by questioning qhy there was racial banter between characters. and you cant ecven keep up with your own arguement

not everyone back then was racist, HENCE that doesn't mean they WOULD of dropped the N-word every 3 minutes. especially when we pretty much see West interact with 3 characters 95% of the movie (Klein, the train conductor and loveless). is it really so unbelievable that at least 1 of 40 million americans, klein, a highly educated scientist who seems to value logic over everything else wouldnt have to mutter the N-word every 3 minutes??

the seocnd cahracter the conductor is far far below west. is some lowly train condutor about to start slurring the top US marshal

and our third character loveless, is a racist..

you under think points when convenient to your argument, then overthink others when convenient...

Please put the bong down when you are typing.

My point has always been that I can accept Smith in the role, even though at the time the movie was set, he wouldn't have been given such responsibility and respect.

So, go about the movie and we'll suspend out disbelief.

Unfortunately, they then had to start making the racist "jokes" back and forth.

Ok, so if you are going to do that, then don't just put it out there that Loveless is the only racist who existed back then.

They thought it would be a funny bit, but it fell flat.

not everyone back then was racist, HENCE that doesn't mean they WOULD of dropped the N-word every 3 minutes.

We have idiots now who want to ban the books Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird because they use the N-word. Never mind that during those times, both the 1860's and the 1930's, the use of the N-word was quite common. It wasn't thought of as an insulting word, it was just another word, as was "Coon" and other words we now consider racially offensive. It's like how women used to be referred to as "broads" or "chicks".

People didn't have to be racist to use the N-word. It was a common word in our language.

you under think points when convenient to your argument, then overthink others when convenient...

Which is another way of you saying that you know you can't actually give a reply to what I wrote because you know it will prove you wrong. The DID try to kill a US Marshall.

reply

please stop talking.. you got destroyed... trying to outrant me doesnt win the conversation.. you literally quoted 3 sentences...

you are soo dumb..... its a alternative time line steam punk movie... and you are hesitantly suspending disbelief.......

please go away... you are soo dumb... sooooooooooo dumb........

reply

That is because you literally only made sense in 3 sentences.

its a alternative time line steam punk movie

And yet they deal with people being racist like they were back then.

You are sooo bi-polar.... please go away... you are sooo bi-polar....sooooooooooooo bi-polar

It was a sh!tty movie and anyone who thinks it was a good movie is an idiot.

reply

It wasn't.

Smith doesn't feel "into" the role and has a expression on his face throughout most of it that reads "Did I just say this crap?"

Hayek seems bored and irritated, she doesn't seem to want to be in there and feels embarrassed delivering the dialogue.

Kevin Kline seems uninterested in the whole thing, especially in the completely absurd moments he doesn't seem to want to give 100% because he realizes he's in a stinker, he is when he's playing POTUS and clearly hoping nobody else recognizes him.

Sir Kenneth Branagh seems to be trying to create the identity of another actor delivering a careless campy performance in hopes nobody can recognize him and associate his name with quality productions like 1996's Hamlet. In other words, he seems so embarrassed to be apart of the whole thing he doesn't even think its worth the effort in trying to create a memorable character and hoping the whole thing just slides under a bus when its all over.

The only actors who don't seem to be embarrassed to be apart of this turkey are actually the horses.

reply

So, you "think" that anyone who disagrees with you on this movie is an idiot. And you literally quoted ONE sentence from him.

Plus you have no idea of what punctuation, capitalization or grammar is.
