Neve Campbell horribly miscast INCLUDES ENDING SPOILERS!!!

CONTAINS MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Wild Things is a good film and the plot is fun and twisty. However, Neve really ruins it for me. The role I think intended to be a dizzy blonde character but due to Neve's hot-property status at the time it's obvious that they tried to mould her into a role for which she was clearly not suited. Neve has a quiet intensity and aura of intelligence. Blonde, mouthy and dumb-looking she definitely aint. So the big reveal wasn't as mind-blowing as it might have been had the likes of e.g. Jaime Pressly played the role

reply

So you feel that Denise Richards should have played Suzy ?.

reply

Heheh. Denise's performance was suitably OTT IMO and I think she did a fine job. I actually love the casting all round except for Neve. I kept having to tell myself she was supposed to be trailer-trash but I had a hard time believing it myself. I also don't really find Neve sexy in the traditional sense. She's more of a thinking man's crumpet no? I think a typical bleach blonde bimbo in the role of Suzy would have been a real sucker-punch come twisteroo time. It would also have added to the joke by challenging the blonde stereotype. The girl you thought was typical trailer-trash is really a genius mastermind. The boat scene at the end would have made more sense if she showed up with dark-dyed hair instead of being the other way round

reply

I assume that Neve was offered the better and complex role because she had done more movies than Denise. She had 'scream' and 'scream 2' to her filmography. Plus she had been in the industry longer.
However it would be interesting to see Denise playing Suzy. How would she pull it off ?. Neve was an intelligent character that I'm surprised she gave up her education in the end.

reply

Dude, it's obvious you wanted the less attractive Neve Campbell out of the way, and trade her for a hotter girl, so we get Denise Richards + new hot girl. And you know what? I agree with you! The sexiness of this film is ruined by Neve.
So your entire justification... I'm not buying it :D
You assume that the role was supposed to be a ditsy blond based on what exactly? Were we watching the same film? The character is supposed to be trailer trash (which Neve looked and acted like), not ditsy blonde bimbo (sounds like a porno stereotype). In fact, what you are describing sounds like Kelly Van Ryan's (Denise Richards) twin. Let me sum it up: trade in for a hotter girl= hotter threesome! I'm with you!

Turns out that Lost was ultimately about a smokey and a sap who are bickering

reply

As for my motives, I happen to be gay, but I still know sexy when I see it ;) Neve was playing pretty much the same character here that she played in Scream. In that film, her role was one of a classy, studious virgin and she played it brilliantly. The role of Suzy required something that Neve inherently isn't IMO. Someone with a K-POW body, who's super-sexy yet trashy and that looks like she actually belongs in those threesome scenes. When sharing the screen with Denise, Neve looks like a frumpy heifer. Theresa Russell could've pulled it off I agree although she was prolly a tad too old to play her. I think the character demanded much more of the naive, annoying, childish... think Jennifer Tilly in Bullets Over Broadway. It would have made her 'death' scene much sadder and the reveal a lot more explosive

reply

think Jennifer Tilly

With that little bit you have awakened an old dusty thought within me concerning this film. Now I have two reasons to agree with you! She did in fact feel "old" (notice "feel"). I remember thinking that when I first saw it.

reply

Exactly. Neve played the role as the character was very complex. But as far as looks are concerned, she was dissapointing. If I had a choice for the casting. I would pick Jennifer Love Hewitt to play Suzy. That would be the perfect casting.

reply

Hehe. JLH? I don't know if it's because she has lost her sex appeal that makes me say the following now or if it's because I can't truly see it (cause I have never been a JLH "admirer"); but I just cant' see it. They may share too much characteristics to actually being able to enjoy both Denise and her. It should be someone possessing a different kind of sexiness/beauty. Any more suggestions?

What about Elisha Cuthbert (if we get to chose whoever across time)? As I really can see the blonde and brunette match-up (classic).
Or Sherilyn Fenn (so fragile, innocent and pure-looking). Or would be she too classy looking for the role?

reply

JLH is an improvement. She's deffo got the sexy thing goin on. My only concerns are that she looks a shade too confident and intelligent to me and like Milkyway, I'm not sure Denise and herself would share screen-time well due to similarities. I think we all agree Denise was perfect casting eh.

I really think Suzy should have been played straight-up dumb and naive to give the eventual 'genius-all-along' twist that bit more punch and an actress that isn't too associated with intelligence or strong female types.

LOVING the Cuthbert/Fenn suggestions! Both of those fit the bill just super!

I also think Brittany Murphy coulda pulled it off in her day God rest her soul

reply

Hehe

Plus, I think that JLH looks too cocky, uptight and just not convincing (except playing a certain role).

The thing is that the transformation must also be convincing. Focusing on getting an actress that could just play the ditsy part (JLH), and when the big reveal comes on, you will get a Pamela Anderson moment. If you know what I mean :D

"LOVING the Cuthbert/Fenn suggestions! Both of those fit the bill just super!"
=) I am glad you liked those two suggestions. I do wonder though if Fenn is just too classy looking? She looks just too immaculate, especially when she smiles. Whatever dirt or poorness she would "show", would be non-existent when she smiles - it is so radiating. But at the same time she could really play well with the innocent and naive part.
Btw, what is the bill exactly for this role? :D So we are on the same page.

Brittany Murphy could pull it off, but we were talking about trading Neve in for a hotter girl (granted, Murphy might be an upgrade, but not the best). No offense speaking ill of the dead. All I can imagine is her squeaky voice and pouty lips (plastic surgery in her later days?).

reply

She was made to look bad! She is hot, charming and beautiful for my eyes. Not for some people's eyes who speak here.

reply

Iam a Neve Campbell fan and i strongly disagree with anyone who finds her unattractive! Different taste for diff. people. Who are you to decide the other one is best and Neve is worst? Don't you have minimum ethics that her fans feel insulted on your own views made by your lens? I for myself didn't find what is there in the other girl! Neve is the best and special.

reply

Her role was never intended to be dumb and ditzy. Did you even look around suzy's trailer she lived in? She had books EVERYWHERE and she was even reading one when the detectives came to visit her. She was meant to be intelligent. She just grew up in a trashy environment. About neve's attractiveness it all comes down to taste. You don' think shes hot but others do (myself included). I think neve looks smokin in wild things (in a really rough and dirty way).

reply

AGREE! Saying Neve unattractve just because these people don't doesn't mean she isn't! Such entitlement these guys have! I found the other girl non attractive but i thought may be others wud find her attractive.

reply

Neve was the best of the cast. Great performance!

Hey detective, what's your favorite scary movie?
- Sidney Prescott, S3

reply

She was the best choice. Suzy isn't a dumb girl, she's extremely intelligent and she's not supposed to be a va-va-va-voom. Campbell was actually offered the Kelly part and chose to play Suzy.

reply

It was kind of hard to buy Neve Campbell as the trailer "trashy" girl type. I agree that someone else could have pulled off the role better, especially one that did not have a "no nudity" clause either (but that is besides the point).

Looking back on it, I think someone like Jordana Brewster or Bijou Philips would have fit that role better (although both of them were only 18 at the time and probably would not have been cast). I like Jamie Pressly, but I think she does not come across as being smart enough to have pulled the whole thing off (at least in a believable way). Shannen Doherty, who is the same age as Denise, also could have pulled it off the role of Suzy better, I think.

reply

I think Campbell did the great as well as Kevin Bacon.

reply

Me, I thought both Richards and Campbell gave fairly lousy performances. But it didn't ruin my enjoyment any, since the whole thing was so enjoyably trashy and entertaining.

Acting-wise, I think Bill Murray basically stole the show.

reply

I thought Neve Campbell was pretty solid.

reply

I thought she was pretty engaging. Seemed to me the most believable character for some reason.

I'll speak for you, Father. I speak for all mediocrities in the world. I am their champion.

reply

Agreed. She doesn't pull it off.

I think someone like Rose McGowan would have been perfect.

I think it just comes down to her really, just her bad one-note acting. I was never a fan of hers to begin with. She was horribly miscast in “Wild Things”. Denise frickin Richards out-acted her in that one. Denise Richards, for crying out loud! Campbell’s performance in “Wild Things” was just BAAAD. Having someone else in the “Suzy” role would’ve made that film a whole hell of a lot better, in my opinion. To be fair, I didn’t mind her too much in “Drowning Mona”. Everyone was great in that underrated gem. Sooo…yeah, overall, it’s her bad acting really. People must’ve realized sooner, rather than later that she just couldn’t cut it as a “Leading Lady”. shrug Anyways, that’s my take on it.

reply

I thought she did a great job. I bought her as the drugged out mess from the 'wrong side of the tracks' and I bought her as the genius schemer when the reveal came at the end.

reply

Agree with all of that, but Neve Campbell had (yes, had, as in “in the past”) neither talent nor charisma to advance her career.
