biggest plot hole: why would a RICH GIRL try to scam her mother out of $

A rich girl who has everything.lives in a mansion, spoilt by her ignorant mother who gives her everything including valium. Believes her daughter straight away when she accuses her boyfriend of rape (some mothers would scream liar) doesnt even care when it turns out shes lying, pays up, doesnt care she lost her bf.
I know some people would scam their own mother, but a paris hilton type girl? So she can give half to a complete stranger?

It's been mentioned twice in the movie that Kelly had to wait until her mother's death in order to receive her heir. Apparently, she wouldn't wait that long to be independent. The question is how Kelly intended to hide the new riches from her mom.

this is a very valid point. why would she wanna scam her mother when she gave her practically EVERYTHING. I doubt she wouldve stopped spoiling her once she was 18....The plot would make more sense if they had portrayed the mom in a different light. Mean abusive and withholding.

Keep in mind (spoilers) that it was Neve Campbell's masterplan to kill Kevin Bacon for revenge and to use/blackmail Matt Dillon to do it. Denise Richards was just collateral damage. Kelly never would have thought about "cashing in" her inheritance early (as you mentioned, she's a spoiled rich girl who wants for nothing) but the man she's in love with asks her to do this "with" him so they can "live happily ever after" so she helps plot the scheme. When they first meet up after the trial (the infamous 3-way scene) she excitedly leaps into his arms saying, "It worked...just like you said it would!" I always took that to mean that it was his idea to begin with, not hers.

loki1432 has all the answers everyone needs.
It feels like a lot of people struggled to keep up with the story line in this movie.

reply

It is this, as well as Kelly wanting some revenge on her mother who she obviously disliked.

I have known girls like this who would screw their parents to get $$$$$. How about this little brat who moved in with a friend and is suing her parents to pay her college expenses, etc.?

What you're talking about would be a logical flaw and not a plot-hole.

Everyone uses the phrase 'plot-hole' incorrectly on IMDB these days :/

reply

It's not a flaw or a plothole. The idea originally came from Suzie and Ken the lawyer. She manipulated Sam into thinking it was his plan and needed him to get Kelly on board.

Erik and Lyle Mendez where rich and had rich parents and they murdered them for the inheritance.
