Pertinent question, sorry about the two-year delay. I did not get it, other than that it seemed hokey to them, but so was the stuff that Motss was turning out. Maybe the conservatism of "don't change horses in midstream" messages was not appealing. It certainly lacked imagination, which Motss and Brean cannot be accused of lacking. Possibly it was a competitive thing, someone else was turning stuff out and so it had to be bad.
I think the ads may have been there to remind the audience that - during all the action - a simultaneous traditional presidential campaign was underway ... the one that Motss hated to see get the credit for his victory. It also helped justify his anger, since we viewers knew how corny those campaign spots were. After all, something had to set him off for the climax, and what better than some syrupy false history stealing the thunder of his false history.
