My guess is because at the time he was pretty strung out on drugs.

I don't think his head was in a good space. I think if he had his time again, he'd likely keep his mouth shut.🐭

I agree the movie was good and his role as John Royce was good too.

The reason he bashed the movie was mainly because in that time he was dealing with a lot of pressure and personal problems. He did not feel comfortable and in good spirits..His wife left him, he could not see his kid so much as he wanted and he had problems with the drugs and the justice..

I think, the character of Sheridan, who, in the movie has problems with the law ,and the police and the journalists are selling his image as the bad guy, somehow was showing his own life..He complained about he had to film scenes of running and it was tedious and he meant he did not like the plot either..The movie was not a comedy, the plot told a stressing story of man with a lot of problems and I think that reflected Downey's own problems too..

When one feels so miserable and messed up like he felt in that time, hardly enjoys anything..The movie was good and better than others that he filmed in previous years where the characters and the plot were ridicolous..His character in this movie was interesting and the storyline very intriguing too, I dont get he gave a bad review so I only think it was due to his bad mood and personal problem which made him feel unsatisfied with everything ..

Personally I think John Royce is a much better character than the posh and ridicolous Tony Stark ..
