If Titus hadn't killed Tamora's son...
None of this would have happened if Titus hadn't killed Tamora's oldest son, right?
In the original context of the play, was Titus portrayed as being just in having her son killed?

Correct. This is one of the problems I have with the play: in order for one to accept it as a tragedy, you have to subscribe to the right-wing notion that nationalism is an act of morality for you, and an act of immorality for everyone else.
shareno Titus killing Tamora's son was revenge for titus's 21 dead sons killed in the war with the goths.
No matter how many sea lions are killed each year by sharks, it never seems like enough
Not revenge exactly, but rather to appease their ghosts according to their religion.
shareKilling soldiers who were trying to conquer their land!? How dare those Goths?
share^THIS
There's a big difference in soldiers dying in battle and a helpless prisoner being cut to pieces in a barbaric rite.

If Titus had taken the Imperial Crown for himself, none of this would have happened.
If Titus had supported Bassianus' claim over Saturninus', none of this would've happened.
