Harry Lennix

I personally think one of the best aspects of the film is Harry Lennix's performance as Aaron-an evil, brilliant, rutheless and sexy villain. His confession scene (A thousand dreadful things...) is the best in the film-aside from the throat-cutting. Care to discuss?

reply

Yes, he was excellent. He gave the best performance after Hopkins.

reply

I totally agree. not everyone can pull off shakespeare; but this guy was brilliant. He needs to get more roles like that.

reply

Agreed.

He was better than Hopkins. Hopkins was rigid and incomprehensible and occasionally weird for no reason. I think Harry, Jessica Lange and Alan Cumming walked away with the movie.

You kidding me?

Its one of his greatest performances....

reply

I guess I'll have to watch it again, because that's what everyone says, but I really didn't get his performance the first time I saw the movie.

reply

Its alright

Yea, see it again. You might change your mind.

I will say that I liked Aaron more than Titus. At least Aaron was very self aware and up yours. He didn't kill his kid and then cry about two of his sons later. (I mean, I do know that Titus thought that what he was doing was right and all, and at least Aaron knew what he was doing was wrong.) I thought that Anthony Hopkins was brilliant, but I loved almost everyone in the film. Jessica Lange was fabulous, I thought - more sympathetic to me then Titus. Alan Cumming as the emporer was also great. Ah, my favorite was Aaron. Such a fascinating character. And he was so cute and amazingly acted.

I agree with this.

But damn if Titus Andronicus did not have a dream cast, all things considered.

reply

Oh mos def!! I kinda wanted to know the story behind the facial scars though.

Of course I'm gonna TELL you the right thing to DO.... I'M A HYPOCRITE!!!!

reply

Well, scarification is traditional in some parts of Africa for cosmetic purposes (I've read that scarification is more popular than tattooing in African cultures because black skin scars better and, obviously, tattoo ink is harder to see on dark skin).

But yeah, I love Lennix's performance. He plays the villain with great venom and somehow, great dignity at the same time. You get the impression that when Aaron recites the litany of all his crimes, it's really spitting in the faces of everyone who would make him out to be the devil incarnate.

Harry Lennix did a wonderful job in this movie. His delivery of lines excellent; when he delivered his lines it felt more like watching a theatrical actor rather than a film actor. Aaron was my favorite male character in the movie, and that was in large part because of Harry's portrayal of the character.

reply

I agree with everyone here, Lennix was amazing in this film.

Oscar Worthy.

reply

I agree with everyone else, and somewhat with the one who preferred Lennix over Hopkins. I didn't always like Hopkins all the time, but I ALWAYS loved Lennix.

He was the best actor in the film. Not only was he well cast for character but his enunciation of the dialogue was clear and eloquent. Like others I think he was better than Anthony Hopkins. The other actors I really enjoyed were Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Matthew Rhys as the evil sons and Colm Feore as Marcus, Titus's brother. And let's not forget Jessica Lange who was on a par with Harry Lennix for best actor in the film.

my vessel is magnificent and large and huge-ish

reply

Not only the movie, but one of the best performances by any actor.
And SPECIFICALLY that very scene.
I came in here because of Harry Lennix. It so happens that the show "The Blacklist" is the wall on IMDB right now- and he's one of the characters.
Gotta run, it's back on. :D

I agree that Harry Lennix was the best presence in this film. He has an intensity that compels and it is hard to move one's eyes to other characters when he is in the scene! I am sure he is often frustrated with the dearth of meaty roles for black actors in Hollywood. He certainly plays a top-notch villain! Did he even get an Academy Award nomination for this role in Titus?
