The Field was very similar

The Field has many similarities. The time frame and setting (pre-Hitler rural Ireland), the local church's strict ideology, the father son relationship sought out by the son returning from America (Tom Berenger was the returning prodigal son in the Field). But the performances in the Field were even more compelling than the dramatic play in This is My Father. Sean Bean and John Hurt and Richard Harris were just unbeatable in their art. The play and script were better written and closer to the heart than in this movie, despite the fact that this is a warm and delightful movie. Just watch the Field and you'll see what I mean. It's King Lear-like.

I watched this movie last night. 'The Field' is one of my favourite films of all time. I really didn't think there was much similarity at all. I think the likenesses that you have suggested, the familiar issues, the role of the church etc..was part and parcel of rural life in Ireland.

The only way that these two film are similar is that they are set in rural Ireland
