I actually liked the move

It is not your typical fast paced war movie. It goes deeper into the soul and mind of a soldier. I can relate, being a soldier 14 years already.

I can understand why some people don't like it. Different people, different tastes.

It is a very fine film. Something that stays with you for a long time. Necessary viewing, in my opinion, along with all the other titular 'war' movies.
It gives a totally different perspective, and brings you into the action in such a unique way. Displaying war in a much more human sense. Which unfortunately amplifies the tragedy, but this is necessary.

I enjoyed it, as well. It was a very different style than I'm used to seeing in a WWII film. It almost came across as a Vietnam War movie. Partly the tropical/jungle environment, yes, but a few characters had a more modern feel, also.

At any rate, it was a very human story and I found a lot of it quite poetic (both dialog and cinematography).
