watched it for the 1st time. nick nolte

Was the best in this i thought. His greatest role imo i loved every scene he was in. Especially going in to one when his orders were not obeyed and not even flinching when mortars were going off around him.

This is a great war movie i avoided it because all malick's films i've seen have been long winded and confusing in a way like tree of life etc badlands wern't to bad
But his films didnt do it for me.
But thin red line i rate his best and sad i avoided this for so long

Very good performance. Up there with his work in Q&A and Affliction.

Couldn't agree more, this is one of Nolte's finest performances, and this is one of Malick's finest films.

reply

For sure, one of Nolte's best.

Great performance for sure. He should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for it. That same year he was nominated in the Best Actor category for "Affliction". It rarely happens where an actor or actress gets nominated in the same year for the two awards. Nolte is the caliber of actor who would have deserved that honor.

Just watched the movie for the first time also and came here to post the same thing. Such a solid performance, the best I've ever seen him do (though I haven't seen too many of his movies). I didn't really like the character as a person, but I understood him.

He was very good in this. I actually said "wow," at one point. ;) Very impressive work, here.

Disagree. A gruff, stoic, cold soldier? Not much of a stretch for Nolte and quite frankly, I thought he was cartoonish and contrived, yes even despite his one emotional scene.
