John Cusack ... Capt. John Gaff assault...

I know is a movie, and it's based on a novel.. but... the assault was really hard to believe.. only 7 mens and they kill everything... Japanese soldiers on the top, wiht automatic guns... no way only 7 soldiers can do that.

That incident is based on something that actually happened. James Jones based the character Gaff, who is played by John Cusack in the film, on Charles W. Davis who received the Medal of Honor for his actions. You can read about it on his Wikipedia page, it's interesting stuff.

I have a difficulty watching this scene not because the assault was conducted by only six men (one was wounded)you know 'fog of war' and everything but because of the way it's edited.
They approach and hide behind the rocks, calls in artillery, they are facing a bunker in front of them, Rush forward, solider goes gung-ho, rush back.Cusack throws a grenade, shoots a few Japanese, the guy with the Thompson fires away.
Then instantly there running over the top of other bunkers and a solider appears from nowhere in a sleeveless jacket with a shotgun.
Where did he come from? In the build up to the assault nobody has a shotgun and there all in full uniform.

Can't understand how there facing a bunker then instantly running over the tops of others.

In the book they attack the bunker twice, when Gaff John Casuaks character says fall back they literally do fall back and attack the next morning. It probley was filmed that way too considering how long the original cut of this movie was but was edited down to one assault which explains the appearance of Queen the shotgun guy.

Thanks for that. Now makes sense.
