Did this movie have an editor?

According to the credits, yes, there were three editors.
According to the three hours I just watched, NOPE.
I don't think they cut anything out. It could have been a snappy, tight, two hour movie that kicked ass. Instead Mr. Malik gave us a pretentious piece of garbage with an unbelievably underused cast. What a waste.

I take it you'd never seen a Terrence Malick film before this.

Unfortunately, I sat through all six hours of "The New World", which I then proceeded to throw in the garbage. Is the "Tree of Life" unbearably godawful also? It's on my netflix list...

If you haven't liked anything you have seen so far, I don't think The Tree of Life will win you over.

reply

Are you joking? The movie is neither garbage or pretentious. It's a great movie, perhaps the greatest war movie ever. It's almost three hours long and the cast is amazing. I'm not sure that you even watched the same movie...

reply

I can't speak for you, but I find that many who claim this is the greatest war movie of all time have never served, and/or never served in combat. Men in combat do think of life and death, but most do not have an existential crisis and focus on the beauty of nature while getting shot at by others. They focus on their difficult job. The journey of thinking of existance beyond yourself and pondering the absurdity of the world comes later.

reply

No one gives a *beep* that you served, let alone that you feel the film is "unrealistic" to your narrow experience of combat.

reply

A third of the movie is religious garbage narration over pointless scenes.

Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans....

reply

My guess would be the OP was looking for an action movie not a drama.

reply

I believe the original cut was 4.5 hours long. So yes, they cut 1.5 hours of footage. That's why the cast felt underused.

reply

Well, I wouldn't call it pretentious garbage, but it was most definitely far too draggy and detached in spots, even for Malik.

reply

They actually shot over a million feet of film, which according to the special features documentary, 6,000 feet is an hour, so over 166 hours of footage. I'd say that's quite an edit.

It is all about the art form. Someone said that Saving Private Ryan is like a novel whereas The Thin Red Line is like a poem. So some people prefer a straightforward storyline while others like to connect emotionally and ponder on the great questions of life.
So why bother, obviously the Malick films are not for you. I did like Badlands, Days of Heaven and New World. My 17 year old son was blown away by Tree of Life but for me it was boring.
