the baby bird. a question.

I am a huge animal rights advocate and hate the idea of a soul suffering for the sake of a movie. This film is beautiful in terms of philosophical, but I wanted to make sure that the baby bird wasn't hurt or killed. Anyone know? Thanks

I'm sure if you sit through the credits there will be the text that appears which states that no animals were harmed during the making of the film. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

You may want to skip Apocalypse Now, though, if you haven't seen it before. A water buffalo gets slaughtered at the end, and it was done for real. It was part of some rural tribe's ritual in the Philippines that Coppola decided to film, but he got a lot of heat for it from animal rights activists.

reply

Yes, the Buffalo slaughter scene was way over the top, disturbing. And as you said, a real filmed killing.

reply

But if it was going to be killed that way anyway by the tribe, where's the harm filming it and using that film?

If it had been done just for the movie, then that would have been wrong.

I've seen the scene, and whilst disturbing, at least the the cow died quickly. A much quicker death I might add than most of us will suffer.

Malick is a Naturalist. Even if it were real, the greater good is his end result. The entire film is about EXISTENCE. Man and Animal. "What is the war in the Heart of Nature" (Paraphrasing Here), but the line is a big one.

Malick is a philosopher and a Christian, not to mention a birder.

I got news for em. Theres gonna be hell to pay. Cause I aint Daddys little boy no more

A. Do you understand the essence of the scene?

B. Do you understand and/or know Malicks World View on the Topic At Hand?

... Yeah, he's just murdering Poor Baby Birds for the hell of it. Basic Stuff here

reply

You can relax, no animals were killed. At the end credits there is a text saying: "No animals were harmed in the making of this film".

reply

that doesn't mean they dind't just found the bird like that, filmed it and moved on without helping it.

reply

Well I think they just put the bird on the ground, splashed it with some fake blood and just let it crawl. Even so, that scene was so sad, it hit me harder than anything else in the entire movie.

The OP has a habit of initiating a thread, and then never returning for an answer. What's worse, the questions that she poses are often quite stupid.

reply

Animals were obviously killed.

Did you not see the acres of land exploding? Any time people trample into a natural environment, hauling all kinds of equipment and start detonating bombs, animals die.

Grass, trees, Insects, birds, bees, snakes, frogs etc. are all part of a delicately balanced eco system. Blowing it to bits will surely guarantee the destruction of these things. The soil itself is alive.

This should be obvious.

One man looks at a dying bird and sees nothing but unanswered pain. Another man sees the same bird, and feels the glory.
