I have to disagree. I'm not a huge fan of Cher's singing, although I can see that she is very good at it. But I DO think I've never seen a movie where Cher has done anything less than a great job at acting. Mask, Moonstruck, the Witches of Eastwick, Tea with Mussolini, I've loved her in all of these movies and perhaps it's because my expectations are slightly lower (as they are when all singers act), but I still think she's a really great actor.

I suspect this may be a film that appeals more to women than to men, in general. As for Cher, I think that her performance was spot on. Her bigger than life reputation as a super-star probably gets in the way for many people and may make it hard for them to see her performance for what it is. British women actors are seen as serious actors. Cher is seen as a bright light. But I thought she held her own in this film in the company of some of Britain's greatest actors. Given her lines and scenes, she played a believable character.

She got top billing as her character is why the movie was made, but she is just part of the ensemble of this fabulous group of characters. Loved her in it! She always brings 100% to any role she does.

I loved Cher in this movie. I think she is a wonderful singer and actress and this is my favorite movie of all time. I just loved the acting in it, the characters. I mean there were SO many great actresses in this movie.

I think your right (whoever said this) that it does appeal more to women than to men. My mom and I loved this movie but my dad didn't like it all that much. :p

I'd give it 8 and a half out of 10 simply because she was great & stole the show ;)

Cher as Elsa rocks. I was obsessed with Elsa for many years.

That movie is way above a 5

From every aspect it was a solid film with a good cast brilliant directing and intense emotional moments.
Cher performed superbly , before seeing the movie I thought her casting was a cacophony, I never thought she could stand next to the likes of Dench Smith and Plowright…
She was a pleasant surprise…
Remember the scene when Smith instructs Cher to pack up and leave because Cher’s boyfriend was about to turn her over to the Nazis?
Cher was absolutely brilliant the atmosphere between the two was so emotionally charged, and so intense, you can really see Cher’s talent…

This comment vastly under-rates the film as well as Cher's performance. But the comment that says Cher stole the show is equally off the mark. This is ensemble acting at its best. The miracle is that Cher holds her own with Maggie Smith, Joan Plowwright and Judi Dench. Lily Tomlin is also a pleasant surprise to someone who knows her primarily as a comedienne.

But I've seen the other stars playing such roles before - especially Maggie Smith. Where else Cher's acting was a complete whiff of fresh air.

I know this is an old thread, but people are still posting here, so....

I loved this movie! The acting was perfect, in my opinionation! And Cher herself claims to be a better actress than a singer, but I've said that ever since I saw "Moonstruck."

I call this a "chick" war movie, and those are the only war movies I can watch. "Saving Private Ryan" and the like disturb and depress me.

At any rate, I give Cher a BIG 9/10 for her performance, because what she does, she does extremely well.

id give her a seven out of ten, which is pretty high for me.
i thought she was pretty damm perfect in the film; really didn't expect what i saw. she was on par with maggie smith and judi dench...not upstaging them and not trying, just co-existing perfectly in a beautifully cast film.

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

I give Cher a 9 out of ten. I enjoyed her preformance and wished her role was bigger. She held her own against the more established actresses. I loved when she sang the song, " Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".

I LOVED her. When she was on the screen, your eyes were on her. Every detail of her persona was perfect: her outfits, her haughty yet approachably kind demeanor, her sense of humor. She didn't exactly steal the scenes from Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright, but, as the previous poster noted, she sure held her own and then some. She and her character were absolutely central to the interest in and success of that film. One can see the meticulous work that won her a Best Actress Oscar and many other awards in her career.

reply

She really should have gotten a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her great work in "Tea With Mussolini"
