I loved the interaction with "Major Who-Ever-You-Are". It is so typical that without knowing his name, she would have recognised his rank immediately.

Yes, it would be quite typical that the wife of a British diplomat would be able read the rank on his uniform. That's what its there for - so people will immediately know what his authority is.
