Where did the kids get their green shifts from?

And why did they bother?

Patrick's mother had a job as a seamstress, but as you can see, the horrible quality of her clothes cause her to commit suicide, leaving behind hundreds of misshapen green shifts in her old house.

When did you find that out in the movie? When is it mentioned? That does make a lot of sense, though!
