Worst. Movie. Ever.

The only similarity this movie shares with Curb or Seinfeld, is that Larry David's name appears in the credits of all three.

Otherwise, you would never have known that such crap could spill from the brilliant mind of Larry David.

This movie was just terrible. It had NONE of the brilliant humour from either Seinfeld or Curb. Trust me, I'm a huge fan of these shows and could survive watching tv with only these shows playing 24-7.

To make matters worse, I couldn't find this movie at at local video store. So thinking it would be a keeper anyway (wow, was I wrong!) I bought the DVD. Complete waste of money and time. I actually had to stop the movie since it was so UNFUNNY and BORING. I have yet to attempt to watch the rest and doubt that I ever will.

I'll just continue to watch the comedic brilliance that is Curb (and Seinfeld).

reply

That's a bummer. It sounds like your expectations were soaring by the time you finally popped the DVD in and hit play. Seinfeld and Curb will certainly do that to you. I, too, am a HUGE fan of both shows, and although Sour Grapes pales by comparison, it was certainly not the "Worst Movie Ever." Expectations, mood and other variables are rarely discussed on these boards yet IMO they play a pretty big part in our initial (and unfortunately sometimes ONLY) reactions to certain movies/shows.
Sour Grapes was actually pretty decent - nothing spectacular, mind you - just not as bad as you think. I just wonder if you ever did give it another shot...

-Oh, the usual. I bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback.

reply

I completely agree with you. "Seinfeld" is my favorite show and recently I started to watch "Curb your Enthusiasm" as well, mainly because it had Larry Davids name on it. But I have to say that I have never been as disappointed with a movie as I was with this one. Honestly I didn't even chuckle once. This movie was mean, stupid, pointless, and most of all painfully unfunny.

reply

Let's be fair. It's not Seinfeld or CYE. It IS TV humor and it doesn't really translate very well to a feature film. The premise is standard-mill Larry David and depise what dms666 says, it has the LD ring to it. Not terrible, and certainly not great, its an amateurish, mediocre movie...but still funny and ironic enough in parts to warrant a couple of stars.

reply

I actually thought it was kinda funny. It was certainly entertaining, and it was very Larry David, perhaps too much? I found that the main problem with the film was the awful casting, except for Orlando Jones. I honestly think this would've made a better film with a different cast and crew. The writing is good, it has the suspense and the story progress of a feature length movie, and it's entertaining. But I foundmyself imagining the cast of Seinfeld all the way, which was disturbing. They shoould've made a bigger effort of making it differ further from Seinfeld, but then I guess it woudn't been made in the first place. This film was after all made at the peak of Seinfeld's success. What could have been a decent film ends up as a spin-off.

reply

I think the high expectations of the movie is what makes people say that the movie sucked. I actually saw this movie without knowing that Larry David had wrote it and before Curb Your Enthusiasm came out. So I basiclly had nooo expectations of the movie. I actually enjoyed the movie though. The comedy was weird and a lil' dumb, but I appreciated its uniqueness. Larry David is a brilliant weirdo.

Yes, this movie sucks ass.

i saw sienfeld after the whole 'sienfeld is god' phase, and i thought it was crap. sienfeld, im sorry to say, is anything but timeless comedy. its boring, and rubbish, and dated. kudos to the show for changing the style of sitcoms, but thats all it did. people only likeit cause they grew up watching it. no one who watched sienfeld after its initial run, and is over his teens, likes the show. well, maybe not no one...

as for this movie, i thought it was pretty funny...

jeez, I figured a college kid would at least know the difference between "your" and "you're". Good luck with that degree.

reply

are we really expected to bother with the opinion of someone who can't even spell the name of the show or its leading actor?

and as for Sour Grapes; yes it did suck alot, i'm just glad LD made up for it with CYE, which is a truly brilliant show.

reply

"I before E except after C"

No, Seinfeld spells his name wrong.

i am shocked and appalled! i haven't seen sour grapes, nor do i have any expectations towards it, the truth is seinfeld is THE BEST SHOW EVER MADE and i stand by it til the day i die! seinfeld was thrown to an insane time slot (3 sometimes 4 a.m.) back in 1998,in my country of origin - portugal. i was 12 years old, i was in the 7th grade and had classes in the morning and still i would watch it religiously every night! i didn't know who jerry seinfeld was until i saw that show and yes for me he is god! no other show makes me laugh the way seinfeld does! i am 20 years old today and i still watch seinfeld whenever it's on tv and still laugh as hard as i did the first time i saw it. it's brilliant and inteligent and it RULES over all sitcoms!

[deleted]

Just saw this last night.

No- it's not the worst movie ever, but it's not good. It's a sitcom or Seinfeld plot stretched out over 90 minutes and it really wears thin.

The part about not being any courts in Alaska was pretty funny though. And the takeoff on Friends was also worth a good chuckle. LD shines through from time to time- enough to make this better than the worst ever. This movie is not so bad if you get it at Netflix.

Worst movie ever? My vote goes to Hope Floats or Summer Rental. I need my $ back.

reply

Now I gotta stop you there. I loved Summer Rental! :)

Okay, so as the person who started this thread, maybe Sour Grapes wasn't the Worst. Movie. Ever. That title might just go to Dude Where's My Car.

You're 26 now. You wrote that post 6 years ago. Isn't it odd that it's been 6 years, and yet 2006 doesn't seem that long ago. 6 years is almost 10 years. That's a decade.

Not many humans get to see 10 decades in their life. Almost 1 decade ago you wrote a post on the internet. Almost 1 decade later I read it. Almost 1 more decade out of the way, less than 7 to go if you're lucky enough. You might not even see 6 more decades. You're nearly 30. You might die a the age of 50 or you might already be dead. That's strange to ponder. Not for you if you are dead, obviously, to me. Because all I know about it, is what I've read. Today, 6 years later.

2006 is about 11 years after I first accessed the www. That's over a decade. So 20 years. 2 decades. Almost 2 decades ago people started to connect to the www and talk to each other. Somewhere between then and now, you logged on and posted your comment. Not long left.

Soon it will be over. And all that will be left is how you used to sit up till 3 or 4am to watch Seinfeld in Portugal.

:( R.I.P.

it is hardly dated. the reason why SEInfeld and Larry David are so immensely popular across all walks of life is because they capture the very essence of humor and in an almost self-referential manner addresses why the things that make us laugh do so, instead of being topical, which is what usually "dates" a show.

now that i re-read your comment i've decided you are purposely just drawing flames, but if you really believe "Seinfeld" isn't timeless then I agree with that other guy in that you are an idiot.

reply

Ahh but you do notice how dated it is, when you happen to see the fat PC and CRT monitor sitting on Jerry's desk, which you rarely see these days, and also when they whip out their fat mobile phones that don't ave angry birds or control satellites and deliver babies and turn lead into gold for you while it recharges.

The humor is spot on for any time realistically, so you're right, but I always half chuckle/half cringe when I see the old technology that used to be common, and how it antiquates the things around it.

Bit like seeing a boom mic in a movie, it causes you to pause and lolwtf? effectively breaking the fourth wall.

reply

I second the vote that you are, in fact, an idiot.

reply

He's right, you are an idiot.

Seinfeld is only considered to be the Greatest show of all time.

reply

I surf this site all the time, and I strongly believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, regardless of how outlandish and base-less they often are.

But you, sir, are wrong.

Seinfeld is hilarious. Not everyone likes it, but if you took a random poll, most would say they think it's funny as hell. I've been watching it since i was 14, i didnt grow up on it, im 18 now. It's just realistic enough to be believable, and ridiculous enough to be hilarious.

Your personal feelings about the show aren't wrong, they couldn't be, I'm only referring to the one line,

"no one who watched seinfeld after its initial run, and is over his teens, likes the show"

Ever been outside your room before?

"Through crimson stars and silent stars and tumbling nebulas like oceans set on fire. Through empires of glass and civilizations of pure thought. And a whole terrible wonderful universe of impossibilities. You see these eyes, they're old eyes. And one thing I can tell you, monsters are real."

reply

I 100% agree!
And this movie is one underrated gem.

reply

Calling "Sour Grapes" the worst movie ever is an exaggeration, but it's one along the lines of all the IMDB fans who think "Shawshank Redemption" is the best movie ever. Sorry, people, but there were both great movies and horrible ones made before you were born.

Consider "The Terror of Tiny Town," the all-midget Western, or "Eegah," the cave man who fell in love with a modern girl. Or "Robot Monster" perhaps.

Even in modern times, movies like "Wing Commander" (1999), which forgets that in space no one can hear you scream, are worse than "Sour Grapes."

But dear sweet Lord, it's not a good movie.

There's one character who needs a crucial surgery.

Another one who reminds us of the worst stereotypes about black characters when he runs away down the street.

But neither can compare to the main character, whose double-jointedness means he never needs to go on a date.

Maybe the worst thing of all about the movie is that I've never seen a comedy that's more mean-spirited. It's almost as if Larry David needed to do all the bits they would never allow him to do on television.

Not the worst movie ever, but Optech may have called it.

Yes, this movie sucks ass.

reply

Wing Commander is wonderful, amazing, almost flawless!

I mean, the DOS game from early 1990s. It's a great game.

I haven't seen the movie, but it's weird how something so great can become something to be mocked so much.

reply

Yes, this is a terrible movie. Not one of those movies that's so bad it's funny, it's just bad. It does however have a lot in comon with Curb Your Enthusiasm. He uses a lot of the same ideas such as pretending to hold the elevator. By the way, I'm a huge Seinfeld/Curb fan. Please don't waste 91 minutes of your life, you'll forever regret it.

reply

I saw this movie before I knew much about Larry and thought that it was decent. I love Seinfeld and Curb also, but this movie is not, nor is it trying to be, either one of those shows (alothough some of the themes are very Curb). I think if you watch it not looking for it to be Curb or Seinfeld then you will enjoy it a little more. Based on what I have read I do not think Larry is that proud of it either, let's not forget that a studio and producer can really affect the movie (a first time director who, although was responsible for Seinfeld, really had no name recognition at the time). I will say this though, I do not know how anyone can sit through the scene where Phillip Baker Hall fires the main Character and not laugh. By the way if anyone talks bad about about Summer Rental again I am coming after them.

Actually 'neighbour' would be perfectly acceptable - if you read the works of early American writers they do not use American English which is a relatively new thing. A decent edition of an American dictionary should include 'neighbour' as an alternative spelling.

reply

I think, as someone else pointed out, that the casting really hurt this movie. The characters were very Jerry and Larry-esque. A more experienced director (Larry Charles?) could've picked up the pace a little.
The ideas were funnier than the movie, but I enjoyed it.

reply

Larry Charles hadn't directed before Curb, this movie is from 1998.

I think it has a lot of good ideas and scenes in it, i think the problem with it is that Larry was so used to working with the Seinfeld characters that were so established that it was hard for him to make up new ones, especially for a one-time movie. For someone who's a big Seinfeld/Curb fan it's definitely interesting to watch, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

reply

Have you seen "Manos: The hands of fate"? THEN you can talk about a bad movie.

I know every day is a gift...but does it always have to be a pair of socks?

reply

I'm probably just recycling everyone else's comments here, but there are 2 things I'd like to say:

Firstly, having not actually seen this movie, I agree that Dude, Where's my car is the worst movie ever by infinity and beyond. It made me sick.

And secondly - for your information, ZenShark: I'm 14 years of age, never heard of Seinfeld untill 2004, live in Blighty so naturally get a *beep* deal when it comes to American TV and, oh yeah, think Seinfeld is the BEST THING EVER TO GRACE THE TV. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it, mo-fo! Sorry, that was highly immature, but I just get so annoyed when arrogant *beep* try to be clever by going against the grain and telling everyone that they're wrong. Now THAT'S immature...

reply

For a huge fan it's surprising you couldn't pick up on the obvious Larry David humour scattered all over the place in the movie. The acting was pretty bad, but the writing was pure David.

reply

I love curb and seinfeld and have yet to see sour grapes, but surely the film isn't that "bad". is it as bad as any hulk hogan movies?

reply

People have claimed to hate it for a decade and those people don't want to go back on their word let alone check out the film again to compare it to the humor of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Freak you!

I am not the Zodiac. And if I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you.

reply

I'm a huge Curb fan and watched Sour Grapes for the 1st time the other day and really enjoyed it. Its very similar to Curb in many ways, but with less swearing. It has a similar story format and comes together nicely at the end. Go check it out if you haven't already.

We all have different taste in movies, like everything else in life. I for one loved Sour Grapes and have enjoyed the handful of episodes I have seen of Curb. I never saw the appeal of Seinfeld though. I think it got old after a dozen or so episodes. I have a feeling that Curb might get old after a while too, though not as bad as Seinfeld.

You could watch these shows 24-7 and that is fine for you, but some of us can only take shows like Seinfeld and Curb in small doses. Kind of makes me think of Arrested Development and Lucky Louie. Those are two shows my wife and I loved and got so mad about when they canceled but when you really think about it, they would get old if they went on much longer. I think Arrested Development may have been just enough. Lucky Louie could have gone on at least a second season before it got old, but eventually it would have grown old.

Sour Grapes was a very refreshing comedy in my opinion. Like nothing you typically see. Honestly, I had no expectations when I saw Sour Grapes and knew not of the connections to Seinfeld. I just saw it on a premium channel I believe, loved it, and then went and bought the DVD. Those I have recommended it to have been mixed on their reviews. An old co-worker said it was the worst movie he had ever seen too, but he never liked any of the same movies or shows as I (He loved Aly McBeal while I hated that show and I believe he watches American Idol, while I hate it, concept included) We agreed on liking Matrix and not much else. But anyway, other people like my brother loved Sour Grapes, yet he also enjoyed movies I hated like The Royal Tenenbaums, Running with Scissors, and he thought the Thunderbirds movie from 2004 was the funniest thing ever, while I couldn't even finish it.

I guess it is just one of those you loved it or hated it movies. I loved Sour Grapes. I watch a lot of movies and that is one of the top 50 comedies that come to mind for sure when I think of comedies.
