Help- The seagulls

So I am doing this film for my Literature Essay and I have everything pretty much pinned down, except I can't figure out the constant sound of Seagulls and there significance. I read somewhere that the seagull can represent freedom, being a messenger, intelligence or a skilful approach to life. However I can't really find how this can relate to the film at all.
Any thoughts? Much appreciated.

I took it as indicative of the film being set on San Piedro Island in the northern Puget Sound region of the Washington state coast where there are presumably lots of seagulls.🐭
