Scenes cut from DVD?

I saw the film in the theater and then recently on DVD. Am I wrong thinking that at least two scenes - a conversation where we find that Wavey's husband's boat had holes smashed from the inside; and the scene when Quoyle visits the boat builder - that I remember from the film were not on the DVD? Why would something be cut from the film and not put on the DVD? I've seen "deleted scenes" added to DVDs, but never the other way around . . .

I've never heard of such a thing either, but I never saw the film in theatres. I've seen it several times on cable, and I'm positive there wasn't a scene in which Quoyle visited the boat builder. The other scened you are referring to I'm not sure about. I do remember a scene in which Wavey admits to sinking her husbands boat with a hatchet, if that is the scene you are talking about. I've never seen the DVD so I can't really say what was added or taken away.

I just watched the DVD and I'd have to agree that I don't remember seeing those scenes in the movie. Strange.

I just watched "The shipping News" on starchoice satellite and I did see the first scene you spoke about, where Wavey told Quoyle about smashing holes in her husbands boat and sinking it. However I did not see the 2nd scene you mentioned, because I was unable to sit through the entire movie, I was constantly up and moving and missing parts of the movie. But I can confirm for sure that one scene does exist ^_^.

Thanks for letting me know I wasn't crazy! ;)

I had the exact same experience. I saw the film in the theater and then got it on dvd and missed the scene where Quoyle gets the boat. Does anyone know why it got dropped from the video version?

The scene does exist - at least in the European version of the DVD. That one's running time is 106 minutes (on the cover) officially, and 109 minutes effectively ... according to the DvD player.

Around 1:29, with Quoyle leaving her house on the morning after Nutbeem's farewell party, she tells him about her husband running off to Winnipeg and her sinking his boat by holing it with an axe.

Can't really see how they could have cut that one out of any version of the movie, without wrecking that plot element.

You may be confusing scenes with the book.

In the book, but not the film, Quoyle visits the ship builder.

In both the film and the book Wavey confesses to Quoyle that she sunk her husband's boat with an axe.

Also, the listed running time for the film and the region 1 dvd are both 111 minutes, so I doubt anything on the dvd was cut.

According to the dvds film-makers commentary both scenes were filmed but were cut from the film. However, they didn't elaborate when the cuts took place so possible early prints of the film did feature these scenes which were subsequently cut from later prints and the dvd?

I just finished reading the book and nowhere in the book does Wavey say she sunk her husband's boat.
