In the novel there it says something about how there was some poetic justice in Agnis, Quoyle and the kids daily relieving themselves on the ashes.
this is one of my favourite parts.

It's such an unlikely but classy way to say, "Piss on you" to a character why truly deserved it!
it's almost like the writer said, "got to have an incestual rape angle to my book to titillate the rubes!"
