In the novel, I'm fairly sure that the head was in a floating suitcase. Don't remember who discovered it, but Quoyle didn't use it as a flotation device.

Who's head was it? Because they said something about a Mr. Melville, but the head looked like Rhys Ifan (but it was such a quick shot, I really couldn't see it).
