Is this series worth it?

I've never seen the Resident Evil movies other than little bits here and there on TV. However, with the Final Chapter coming to theaters, it might be nice to finally check out the series. Is the series worth watching with good story, characters and visuals or is it just a bunch of mindless gratuitous action movies?
