Planned as an 'PG13' animated feature?

The trivia of the movie mentions that it was supposed to be a dark and edgy true adapation to the book. but however the songs and other stuff were added to tone it down, So was this a feature that was planned out as a PG13 feature but it ends up mimicing Disney's style?
