Really Very Bad

This is a dreadful film. Few movies can jump from funny to scary to sad without making their audiences dizzy. This isn't one of them.

There are a few things to like (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are good as "the Aunts" and some of the very kinetic camera moves are great), but ultimately the ridiculous script overwhelms everything.

A special mention goes to Aidan Quinn who's character is so badly drawn that he appears to be in a permanent state of confusion.

I'm sorry for the OP but I don't care that you don't like this film but I guess every board needs its troll.

I'm not a troll and I don't like the movie.

It's just that the book was soooooo good. It had such great characters.
it even had a RABBIT! I would have forgiven them if there had been a bunny in the movie at least, but nope. No bunny. Just a mangled plot that didn't make much sense compaired to the book.

reply

The book wouldn't have made sense as a movie. The author of the book helped to write the script.

I also loved the book, but the movie is quite good too.

reply

I love the transition this movie made from the book. The book focused on the daughters too much anyway.

reply

Which daughters? Sally and Gillian? Or Sally's daughters?

Before embarking on the road to revenge be sure to dig two graves

reply

Sally's daughters were much more a focal point in the book.

You aren't a troll. Everybody has a right to express their opinion and you did so in a good manner. However, I don't agree with your opinion. I thought that the movie was well done. It was cute and had the right amount of humor in it. I thought the kids acting was good as well as the adult witches. The storyline was okay. I just didn't like the ending of it when the neighbors came over and helped them out. They could have a better ending. But it was a good love story as well.

I like cats named nightmare. I have a "nightmare" every night!

Well, I really don't know what to say other than how much I totally disagree with you. It seems from your name, that you are a male and that explains a lot. I don't really know many men who like this film and that is where we see the big gap between men and women.

Oh my god, just because he MAY be a man (and you trying to gender him based on username is pretty retarded) doesn't mean he can't like/not like a movie.

I liked this movie, I'm a WOMAN, but it doesn't mean that I can't concede the fact that it was quite terrible as a film.

reply

peoplpe will like or dislike movies but i think its a great movie one of my favorites

reply

I'm a woman and I didn't like this movie. I liked a few things but overall it was a mess. And really, when the women all in unison scream, "to the kitchen!!" I knew there was no redemption. This movie pushes so many archaic female stereotypes it's laughable.

ur entitled to ur opinion but dear, no one honestly cares. u come here 2 discuss the movies good qualities so dont screw it up 4 everyone else please. thank you.

reply

I'm a man. And I love this movie! I don't think it's a mess at all, it's spooky fun and a general good time to watch. Don't put people in boxes - by doing so you just end up sticking yourself in the box with the label "moron".

I care. This is a discussion board, not a fan board. You (or "u" if that's helpful) may "come here 2 discuss the movies good qualities" but not everyone else did and there's no reason they should. Beautiful set design notwithstanding, this movie was a mess, and there's no reason people shouldn't say so.

This is sort of sad, lol. I haven't read the book, so that might be the reason why I like the movie. But like I always say you have to remember this have to make this for the general population not just the book lovers, I know it sucks, but that's how most book adaptions are. I also think as a discussion board all opinions are appreciated and we need to learn not to get too heated, because It started off about talking about the movie and segwayed into insulting others who didn't think the same as how you were thinking. Let's try to class IMDB up.

The book will make you LOVE the movie! I hate that book. Horrible, depressing, negative downer from start to finish. The aunts were so nasty, I wanted to kill them myself. Ugh!

reply

I really really loved the book but I think it would have been almost impossible for the movie to be faithful to the book but I appreciate the movie for what it was.

reply

I love this movie, always have. It's funny and scary at the same time. It's a great movie. I heard that the scene where they all get toasted and insult each other while passing around a bottle of tequila was real as Kidman brought a cheap bottle of tequila on set and they all imbibed before the scene was shot. It's a fun movie and one of my favorites.

reply

It wasn't a dreadful film, but it was somewhat slow. I thought the story was thin and wishy-washy. I guess it was meant as a "feel-good" movie.

Having a bad actress like Sandra Bullock in your movie doesn't help.

reply

I don't agree with the general consensus that it jumped from humor to romance etc too much I do however think the FIRST HALF is brilliant, and then the rest of it focuses too much on the haunting etc. I would have preferred if the main plot did not focus on Gillian's abusive boyfriend and his ghost, I would have liked more spells or something in the guise of The Witches of Eastwick where they inadvertently cast spells on the town that go awry, but since it was trying to be faithful to the book, I can't fault the movie on that. Every time I watch it I think how much potential a TV show version would have.

reply

I just don't think it works as either a romance, comedy, drama or fantasy flick. The script has little wit. Whilst Sandra Bullock is the film's chief asset, I think I understand why it tanked so badly at the box office.🐭

reply

There's definitely some things to admire about this movie (most of the actresses were good), but overall, it's a cliche melodrama that's very uneven in tone.
