the knife

As I was watching this movie, I took note of how at one point Douglas really zones in on the knife that Paltrow was gripping and had set back down on a cutting board or countertop or whatever. I was thinking, a-ha he's gonna use her fingerprints on that knife for some nefarious reason, probably to kill Viggo! When Douglas goes and stabs Viggo on the train, it even looks like it's the same knife. I thought for sure it was going to be a frame job. But nothing was mentioned of it! Maybe it's cus I had just watched Fatal Attraction and had the exact same thought about fingerprints on another Michael Douglas knife. But I was really expecting to see some frame job with that knife, and was kind of shocked when nothing came of it.

I am currently rewatching A Perfect Murder, the first time on blu ray, and that scene just happened.

I don't know if it was the hi def or what but I just noticed that the knife, as you said, Steven uses on David / Winston looks strikingly similar to the one Emily briefly wielded.

Counter top will do. There could have been a chopping block nearby.

I am almost positive that if Emily had not have figured out the whole thing then Steven would have indeed framed his wife.

Perhaps then David's murder would have been perfect.

An alternate ending could have been the framed ending but that, as far as I know, was never filmed.

I could be wrong but I thought Gwyneths knife had a wooden handle and was thinner, while MD's was all steel/silver and seemed closer to a thick butcher knife.
