When I watched this movie as a kid, I totally accepted Meredith as a 26-year-old high-powered publicist with her own assistant. Watching it again at 35, this could be the most unrealistic aspect of the film ;)

I agree, it seems odd, especially since she was a gold digger.

Maybe it's implied that she either lied or slept her way to some high-powered position.
