1961 VS. 1998

okay so BOTH were great movies. Were there parts of the remake that you thought should have been in the original, or vice versa? Reflections? Complaints? Comparisons?

I still prefer the original one with Hayley Mills. She has more charme and charisma and better talent than Lohan.
Its my feeling/mind.

One of the more hilarious, inaccurate and absurd comments EVER n IMDB has to this nugget of ignorance:

"I am a huge huge Maureen O'Hara fan but she looked fat, frumpy and dowdy in the 1961 version."

LOL!!! I'd love to see what your idea of beautiful is (probably some short, fat ho like Kim Kardashian). Maureen O'Hara was drop dead gorgeous in the original movie, NOT fat and about as un-dowdy as one woman could possibly get. She is one of the most beautiful actresses to ever grace the screen.

I've read the entire thread and wish to interject a few tid-bits no one else mentioned:

1. The 1961 version had the contributions of two outstanding, charming and adorable actors: Charlie Ruggles as the Grandpa Leo G. Carrol as the Reverend.

2. Hayley Mills was/is the vastly superior actress to Lohan. All these comments bitching that Hayley was "butt ugly" and "unnatural" must be sucking on the crack pipe. Hayley Mills is SO much prettier and the better actress than the average looking Lohan.

3. The 1961 version has the gorgeous, beautiful and amazing Maureen O'Hara in it. She blows the doors off the mom in the '98 version.

I've always though she was beautiful, even when I was a kid. I've loved everything she's been in and she's been in a lot for sure. She's one of few that can come across as pretty but intelligent, ladylike but tough, a mother or a lover. I don't even remember seeing a fat actress in a 60's film, did they even let them on screen? haha And everyone was dressing better in those days.

1961 hands down.

I prefer the original from 1950 over both remakes mentioned here.

I am the same age as Hayley Mills and a long time fan so it grieves me to say this but what spoilt her version for me was that she couldn't do an American accent to save her life, this made it totally unbelievable to me, a girl from a ranch in California with an English accent just didn't fit, Lindsay Lohan did a much better job of her English accent. I also like that the obnoxious grand mother was left out.

1961...:) though the originally cute Lindsay made her premiere in this one. And a great fun theme by Anette Funicellop and TOmmy Sands..

I think John Wayne would been better in the dad part than Brian Keith. After all, he and Maureen O'Hara did act together in The Quiet Man. I think if Disney were the big player in the motion picture industry then that it is today, The Duke would have jumped at the part if it were offered to him.

I saw them both back-to-back a few years ago and I give the edge to the 1998 version. I was always a huge fan of the original, but the remake did a great job of marginally improving various elements.
