A little too Gay for me

Christine Richi is pretty good and amusing in this but there's too much gay stuff going on in this movie. I don't mind a little but I don't care about gay love problems that much. At least 1/2 the movie is spent about the gays moaning about their love life. I mean that's abbynormal!

And it's a little too unrealistic that someone can make charges of moslesting somebody, lie to high heavens and then just drop them without any reprocussions.
If that were the case everybody would go around doing it.
If you do that in real life you will get in a lot of trouble!
I know someone who did. The police don't like being lied to. They take it very seriously.

That has to be one of the more asinine statements made on this board so far. I get really tired of false heteros protesting against gays and gay issues in movies. If you were firmly heterosexual, it wouldn't make any difference to you. There is definitely too much "hetero stuff' going on in my life.

It happens all the time. If you don't like your neighbor or someone else, you can turn them over to Social Services for 'abusing' their kids. In many counties, the kids will be taken away until things are sorted out. It's pretty scary and depends entirely on the policy of that particular jurisdiction, but it happens a lot. And teachers are accused routinely and their careers therefore ruined, even if found innocent. If you don't like it, call/write your legislators and take back America.

Nice reply dude..although not gay, I can totally relate with your line of thought.

It's this whole mentality of calling things 'too gay' or 'dude, that's gay' etc. I rode up in a chair lift once with a dude who said that like every other sentence. I should have grabbed his penis until he screamed. That's the one type of comment I won't let lie in public. I don't give a sh*t what they think of me afterwards, but I'm not letting that one fly without comment.

It may be an 'expression' and doesn't necessarily imply hate, but one can sure as hell come up with something other than that to express displeasure. I have no idea what it means either, except it's used frequently in Southpark....so....that must make it legit, right?;-)

haha not sure how legit, but definately hilarious. But totally understand about that.. But I think he was implying themed... in which case I'd like to tie him to a chair and make him watch gay cinema all day.. we can go with Brokeback Mountain, FaQs, and Latter Days to name a few...

It's fun to challenge the dudes who say that...clearly you can find out fast if they are homophobic or not. And if not, why say it at all other than to mimic their peers? To me, it marks someone as dumb and thoughtless.... Maybe I should go around all day voicing my displeasure as; ‘that’s hetero dick’……

The funny thing for me is here, as that I am hetero, yet I am well versed in gay cinema. I actually am quite unhappy that we have to subcategorize gay films instead of just putting them into their respective genres.

Yeah, but I think it's important now that there are recognized gay films. Growing up gay I had nothing to watch but hetero love stories. My soul yearned for films involving boys in love and men in love. I was denied that and it has had a lasting effect. Part of the problem with being invisible is that we're not recognized, have no rights and are expected to remain in the closet. That's inhuman and suffocating. I'd like to think that eventually in the human process it wouldn't matter-division and labels, but now it does.

It’s great though that you like our stuff-shows compassion/reason on levels that transcend your sexual orientation.

Well I can get just as emotional watching a gay love story as a hetero love story haha.. But I understand what you mean and I too an glad to see that there has been progress but its far from over.

Nice meeting you

I agree and I get emotional too seeing hetero love stories, but always feeling something more special and connected to gay love stories-not the stereotypes. "Brokeback Mountain" has done more positives in its short time onscreen than probably the last 15yrs of gay cinema. My hope is that momentum keeps going and shows the true diversity of the gay community.

Very nice meeting ya too!

When 98% of the rest of the population are normal, what else do you expect?

I say normal because if that 98% of the world were gay, the human race would go extinct since gays cannot reproduce with themselves.

reply

"When 98% of the rest of the population are normal, what else do you expect?

I'm not sure where you got that statistic but it's invalid-probably from a Christian based link. Try 10% minimum, that's what modern research science, tells us.

"I say normal because if that 98% of the world were gay, the human race would go extinct since gays cannot reproduce with themselves."

If there was a point in that, you lost me. What if the moon were made of cheese? What's the sense of a 'what if' argument? We are at least 10% of the population and as history reveals, we are not going extinct. Deal with that fact and deal with us GBLT folks. You've got a lot to learn apparently, about addressing different groups within a majority who you feel don't count and shouldn't be here at all.

reply

Um. Wow. I don't know where to start.

Your statistics are bogus, that's clear right off the bat. I don't know where you got them, but they're way off base. You could Google better statistics than that.

You also might want to run your definition of "normal" by some people that live outside the boundaries of your small, close-minded universe. You'd find that there are a lot of different ways to live, and most of the people living those ways think they're normal as well. What or who made you the judge?

As for your ridiculous doomsday hypothesis, humanity currently has an OVER-population problem. Less reproduction would be a good thing at this point. Also, even with two percent of the population reproducing, we'd still be at the top of the foodchain, we'd still have this thing called civilization, and all that good stuff. I doubt we'd die out.

Lastly, even if the gay population WAS only two percent of the total population, the gay community was and is being underrepresented in mainstream cinema. Brokeback Mountain is the only explicitly gay love story to, like a "normal" movie, hit major theaters, make money, and score critical acclaim EVER. Do your research.

reply

You're right: we homos bemoaning our sad love lives is "abbynormal". And the "reprocussions" of our doing so in cinema result in illiterate, bovine posts on IMDB like this one.

"First you ask if you can be red, knowing that I'm always red."

That phrase is a pet-peeve of my as well. And working in an auto parts store in Maine, USA (if anyone is familiar with the area) I hear that expression about 50 times a day. Luckily, I was recently promoted, and I now have the power to punish / fire the little puke who uses the phrase the most, which he seems to have just figured out, so I've been hearing it less and less lately :)

Good for you! I hope now you can make your work environment a better place, finally. When people use that expression repeatedly, it's one of the few times I'll come forward and say something, which obviously 'outs' myself. But....I can't let that one go by.

I just watched it again last night and didn't find it excessively gay, its not as if it showed more than a few kisses. Complaints about its gayness made me think of what Christina Ricci said towards the end of the film:

Can I just say to all the girls out there... if you're with a guy who groaned or made some crack during that little kiss... you're with what we call a closet case.

That's the number one tip-off.

Number two is if they freak out about gays in the military. You know, if they can't discuss it without giggling about showering with guys... and bending over for soap and stuff.

That's not good.

Real straight guys don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about wet naked men, if you ask me.

reply

Christina Ricci's last words are perfect! So is this film. It's very cool and very funny. Watched it again on TV last evening and one of the scenes I really enjoyed second time round was when the press converge around the gay teacher's house reporting the "school for scandal"! As Lisa Kudrow and teacher are getting out of their car, you can hear 2 journalists shout: "are you a lesbian?" and "do you watch Ellen?" BRILLIANT!!!

reply

Yeah, but when you're a fag hag, like the girls in the movie, that is TOTALLY normal. That's the kind of stuff you hear.

And what was that line Deedee said in the movie? After the guys kissed? Something like... "Girls, if you're with a guy that just made some stupid comment about that kiss, you're with what we call 'a closet case.'"

reply

Too 'gay for you'?!

WTF is it with some men that are SO threatened by gay people, not even next to them or in their physical environment but on a movie (or TV) screen?

Seriously, what threatens these people so much?
Can someone enlighten me?

How could they possibly be unable to see the sameness of the human condition no matter what sexual orientation (or skin color, or hair color, or disabilities, etc.)?
...or are they just fearful closet cases, as so many surmise?

I truly do not understand.

reply

They are just fearful closet cases.

If I watched a movie where in scene after scene, people rubbed *beep* all over each other's bodies, and I posted a comment that I got tired of all of the *beep* scenes, would you in response ask why I was so threatened by *beep*

Or are there possibly any number of reasons other than threat that people might prefer to not watch certain scenes?

It should be against the law to use 'LOL'; unless you really did LOL!

"Gays moaning about their love life."

Why do you think homosexuals and lesbians call themselves Gay?
Because they aren't! Ever been to one of their parties?
They just bitch and complain and are so catty towards each other.

And why do you think that they use the term "Gay Pride?"
I think it's got something to do with the term "Coming out of the Closet" or staying in that said Closet."

reply

This movie is too gay for you? They hardly show a gay kiss. They talk about gay relationships while two out of four leading characters are, you know, gay and in a relationship? Holy sh!t Sherlock!
