When his wife came to that police tent to talk to him on walkie talkie they could have taken her hostage and used her as negotiating leverage. If he loved her so much he would've given himself up to save her.

Danny is a cop and knows the system, so he knows that they wouldn't actually hurt her. It just wouldn't work.
