Is She Allowed To Do That?

You know that part when she hugs the Emperor and Yao asks "is she allowed to do that?" Would she actually be allowed to do that? Even as a kid I figured that even if she managed to get away with disguising herself as a man to join the military that would have been the last straw

lol good question, and the truthful answer is that, even if Mulan saved the Emperor's life thrice times over, invented the car, the internet and the phone, found a cure for polio and made China the richest and most powerful country in the world, then she would still not be allowed to touch the Emperor.
The Emperor was practically a god, you just don't go hugging gods lol The penalty most likely would have been death for giving the Emperor a great big bear hug without getting his permission.

reply

Especially with a great big sword in her hand. That would've gotten her the axe or the noose for sure!

reply

He aloud it

reply

You mean "allowed".

Eight divided by one-half equals four squared!

reply

No! Touching an emperor is the equivalent of asking a nun for sex.

reply

I think that's some kind of symbolism there. Mulan broke a lot of society's traditions; why not have hugging the emperor be one of them? And the emperor is totally cool with it, too, because he realized the error of his own society.

reply

When YAO (I think it was him) asks that, the other guys shrug their shoulders, but they're not really saying "I don't know"; they're saying "Who cares?".

reply

I think when you save the Emperor's life and save all of China you're given a little bit of slack. She's not "allowed" to do it but they let it slide because it was a special occasion.

.......come on....

reply

Yes, if she wasn't allowed to, she would have had to pay for it... It's the emperor after all..

reply

No. No she is not. It’s called “Lèse-majesté“ and anyone who did that in real life would be so freaking dead. Like, super dead.

reply

But as the emperor allowed it, who cares?

Intelligence and purity.

reply

Hence I said "real life." This is a movie.

reply

So... the emperor's wife couldn't touch his Wang either?

"We monitor every black person's phone in America"

reply

Probably only during arranged private meetings, certainly not in a public setting in full view of everybody else.
