What was up with Skinner's back? (Possible spoilers!)

I know that Skinner had surgery to remove a third arm, but I apparently missed the part where they told why he had a major, (and very odd-looking), scar running the length of his back. It looked as if they had removed and replaced his spine. Very strange. Any ideas?
