i was defintely looking forward to see this movie, as i have liked most of the work of wim wenders i have seen so far. but after an extremely painful hour i just couldnt stand it anymore and had to stop. i even had nightmares about this movie that night. it was just horrible. today i finally finished watching it and after tomtoms very last words, i was quite sure, that this is one the worst (if not the worst) movie i have ever seen and i will ever see.

reading all the comments here, i was happy to see, that there are other people out there who feel just the same way about it as i do. though, i think its good that theres some controversy and that there are even people who love this film.
and trust me, somehow i can understand you, and i dont want to argue, as tastes are different and this movie is a lot about taste.

but please

be so kind and stop this "you dont get it" *beep*

its just annoying.

because not liking a movie is not necessarily about not getting it.

i really understand why some of you like the cinematography of MDH, the acting, the moral. of course we have to accept everyone the way he is. of course life is not about beeing intelligent, sophisticated, good looking, popular and entertaining but about beeing the way you are and beeing happy with it. of course, love is the one thing which unites us all (or at least it should).

but honestly, this movie gives me the creeps, watching the characters makes me sick, seeing tomtom and eloise together is (in my opionion) just worse than tellytubbies ever could be.

so, thats everything i wanted to say i guess

I couldn't agree with you more. I have seen about 45 minutes of the movie and that's probably all i will see of it.

liberal douchebag? what are you, politically and musically challenged? and don't tell me i "don't get it" or i'm too easily fooled. i've heard it all before from negative morons. ever listen to a u2 album?

but, yeah, the movie is kind of slow, i'm in the middle of it right now. but the characters are beautiful, i'm really loving tom tom, though he is kind of frusterating. i can't find where u2 makes the cameo, though. anyone watch until that point?

I'm watching it right now...I think Bono appears during the beginning as Tom Tom was making his way through the lobby. I have to admit that I am strangely attracted to the film. Granted, plot wise it is rather mediocre at best, but its kind of like driving past an auto accident slowly. You want to turn away from it but you just can't. I also think this is probably the best performance by Milla that I have ever seen.

he appears in the middle, not the beginning....i can't totally remember the scene, but i think it's the one where tom tom is running around with a tray of juice, or something.

i actually liked this movie.....although it would have been better without mel gibson, i think. he added nothing, as far as i was concerned, and really, was only placed in the film to draw attention from 'main stream' moviegoers.

yeah, about mel gibson, i would have to agree with that too. he seems pretty out of place in this one. thanks for the bono spots, guys.

so why do the characters make you sick?! Is it so hard to for you to watch these types of people who society is always hiding? Apparently to most people it is, which is why we hide these types rather than embrace them. You don't get it, sorry! It is a beautiful movie. Strange, yes, but beautiful non the less!

Everyone in here who hate this movie should watch Requiem for a Dream. when i saw this movie i felt depressed for about three days. i wanted to cry all the time during those days. i wouldn't ever watch it again but you know what? it is a brilliant movie! not despite the way it makes people feel but because of the way it makes people feel. sometimes you are not supposed to feel good about a movie but to learn and to feel a few things. when the movie comunicates what the creators want to say, whether that makes you feel good or bad, if it succeeds then it is done right. if you just want movies that make you feel nice, then you should choose comedies and movies with car chases, big boobs and many many booms!

I always tell people that movies about mad people, prisoners, addicts, institutions, they all make me sick. I mean, they are not nice. I watch them because it's important to get to know things and because I like movies. But I only watch them once and they're not enjoyable. Beautiful Mind (about John Nash) and Girl Interrupted are in this list.

Funny thing is, this one wasn't all that bad. I would watch it again. In fact, after reading all the discussion here, it made me want to watch it again. Maybe it's because I love the soundtrack made by U2 or because there is this a romantic plot in it. I almost forgot this is a film about a freak hotel.

Its a very calm movie not made for everyone. If you are not ready yet for that kind of movies, go on and watch what you want. Some day, if you are ready for this you will come back and understand. This is not meant negative...those movies need some degree of understanding, if you reach that, ok, if not, go on with your kind of movies. Just TRY to understand some day and this movie will give you a lot.

I don't want to get this movie. I thought to Write Mel Gibson and Jimmy Smitts and Bono asking them to kick in $1.25 for my rental fee back. I just remember the credits rolling and being angry with myself that I sat through this Arthouse tripe

I only watched about 45 minutes of this movies as well. I rented it, thinking that with Mel Gibson, Mila Jovovich and from the brain child of Bono could be pretty interesting...truth is...I FELL ASLEEP! Couldn't be bothered. took it back, and the clerk at the movie store told me that is is the MOST complained about movie they had at the time. Not good....

Fell asleep for an hour while watching on cable. Then decided to DVR the rest so I could find out whodunnit without having to watch every scene. I did like the characterization of the detective as fitting right in at the hotel and I found it interesting that the main character was talking to us from the afterlife.

This movie is a rare breed as it seems to have been made deliberately to annoy its audience. The really awkward pacing, the irritating characters, and the fact that every scene is just a mish mash of several of the weirdos interacting with other weirdos makes the film nearly unwatchable. Not to mention that the main characters narration is almost inaudible so take your pick there's truly something to baffle and annoy pretty much anyone unlucky enough to watch it. Truly mind boggling.....
