His Death Was Elena's Fault (Spoiler)

If she hadn't stepped in to prevent Diego from killing Rafael it wouldn't have given Rafael the chance to gain the upper hand by pulling the gun and threatening her in order to get Diego to drop his sword. And in doing so Diego was ultimately shot by Rafael which was the cause of his death in the end, even though before he succumbed to his wound he was able to take out Rafael.

In fact, she basically was responsible for both of their deaths. She was the one that freed Diego and accompanied him to the mine for the final showdown. It was no great secret that Diego's ultimate goal was to kill Rafael, which is what ended up happening after all when, despite his injuries, Diego tripped the breaks on the wagon which Montero was tangled in and pulled him over the cliff edge to his death. She had to have known that by freeing Diego she was allowing him the chance to exact revenge on Rafael; inevitably one of them was going to die in a fight to the death. And given that Diego was always the greater swordsman it was inevitable that he would have bested Montero in the end.

Diego could have survived and gone on to live a happy life, reacquainted with his long lost daughter had she not interfered.
Good job Elena 😒

I was just watching the movie this week and noticing the same thing.

But, come on............it was her father. (Not her biological father, but the "adopted" father) Expecting her to stand by and watch one father kill the other is a bit of a cold blooded ask. At that point, Elena didn't even know how she ended up being raised by Don Rafael. Maybe she didn't get along so well with him, but she loved him.

It was an extremely difficult situation for Elena. Leave her birth dad locked in prison. Let her birth dad kill her adopted dad or her adopted father kill her birth dad.

Probably some part of her hoped that they could both live. At the time she didn't know Don Rafael had a mine full of prisoners he was about to murder. She had to take in a lot about the man who raised her and loved her in a very short period of time.

^ what the poster said above

I am glad that she stepped in between them. It's realistic that she would feel compassion for the man who raised her for 20+ years, even if he wasn't her biological father. And despite Elena's and Diego's bonding at the horse barn, she wouldn't immediately be attached to this man who she just found out was her father.

Yes, she knew that at least one of them would die, but it wasn't her battle to begin with, especially since she wasn't informed about any of the past events to form a reasonable decision.
