The Man In The Iron Mask vs. 1993's The Three Musketeers

In terms of sheer "star-power"...

Leonardo DiCaprio
Jeremy Irons
John Malkovich
Gérard Depardieu
Gabriel Byrne

vs

Charlie Sheen
Kiefer Sutherland
Chris O'Donnell
Oliver Platt
Tim Curry
Rebecca De Mornay

you'll have to consider both pop-status and legend-status here.

Definately Man in the Iron Mask.

There is no comparision.

I like the musketeer movie, too. It's good entertainment. But it has no chance against MITIM.

I'm suprised that both of the first two replies vote for MITIM. It's a tough call for me... really tough. I mean Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich... WOW!!! but I also think because of my love for the 80's Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Curry are nothing to scoff at, am I right?

What brings you to that decision? Any one actor in particular? Or is it a combination?

Enlighten me, please.

Thanks

reply

Kiefer Sutherland is a good actor, I agree. He's possibly the only one of that cast that I would put in the same league as any of the leads in MITIM.

Plus Three Musketeers has to lose points for Charlie Sheen and expecially Chris O'Donell IMHO.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Three Musketeers is entertaining but in terms of acting ability Man in the Iron Mask is in a different league.

I think Oliver Platt is much underrated. Not that I'd class that movie with this, but still ...

I remember hearing Gabriel Byrne on the In the Actor's Workshop show, saying when he heard who was going to be cast with him, he decided he wanted to just be on the poster, never mind the movie! :)

reply

I have to agree about Sutherland, he is quite underrated in how people view his capability as an actor. I recommend viewers to watch him in the ff:

First of all there is a huge diference because 1993's The Three Musketeers is more of a comedy than a drama (which is suposed to be). So IMHO this is also why most of the people chose MITIM.

One of the bigest dumbness this days is that the movies are judged after the actors that are playing and not regarding the entire movie.

reply

awesome question, and ive been trying to decide this for myself. i think it depends on what you youre feeling? haha id have to say that even though MINTIM is really amazing, i really love TTM. maybe its just because i saw TTM before the other, and i kind of got used to sutherland, platt and sheen as the musketeers, and even that kid who played dartagnan. MINTIM...i didnt like the musketeers because of the people chosen to play them, except for irons...i coulnt get used to them, and malkovich (sorry about spelling) UGH! no. both great movies, and wouldnt mind watching either of them right now.

reply

The 1973 version of the Three Musketeers beats both.

reply

I watch The Three Musketeers last night and watching MITIM now. Asking which is best is like trying to decide between 'Born Free' or 'The Lion King'. Although the characters are the same the films are completely different.

^^^Very very true.

I really like that Iron Mask was a sequel-not just well done, but picking up on the story one generation later. The sequel addressing what it's like to be a living legend, now seriously older, but far from helpless. That the young musketeers were afraid to take on their heroes, would be like present day military being up against Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and General Patton.

reply

It's not an accident that TMITIM picks up the story a generation later since it is based on the third book of Alexander Dumas' trilogy which takes place approximately 30 years after the first book, The Three Musketeers, which of course was the basis for 1993's The Three Musketeers.

Man in the Iron Mask, it captures the Musketeers personality better, however the 3 musketeers follow the book more than Man in the Iron Mask did

Watched the Three Musketeers and then The Man In The Iron Mask... And i would have to say, they are different movies alltogether. TTM is more on the action comedy thing, while TMITIM is more of a serious flick.

For cheer and not so much emotional load, TTM, for movie leve, the later...

Great movies.

I have loved both of these movies since my first viewing of both. Considering the direction that each movie was being taken, I feel that both casts were spot-on perfect for what they were trying to do. I agree that MITIM had the cast with the superior acting chops, but it really isn't by much. I feel that if the TTM cast had been used for the second movie it would have been equally enjoyable. A different feel, certainly, but equally enjoyable nonetheless.

Having said all that, I will submit that Sutherland and Platt could very easily have been chosen over Malkovich and Depardieu and nothing at all would have been lost.

reply

Its funny cause I always imagined this movie to be a sequel to the 1993 film.

reply

When I was a kid I actually thought that it was. Makes me wonder just how many people came to that conclusion. Given the proximity of their releases into theaters, the differences in the characters' ages, and the similar enough looking production design, costumes, and so on it doesn't seem like the most ludicrous of them to jump to.

reply

Both films are pretty bad. At least Iron Mask has Gerad Depardieu. Beyond that I wouldn't steer anyone towards either film.

See the very well crafted 1970's Salkind productions instead.

reply

Good question:

Years ago I would have said The Three Musketeers but it hasn't aged well...Man in the Iron Mask all the way.

I feel like TTM was more a fun romp type thing. TMITIM was meant to be more of a drama, less 'entertainment', as it were. So they're both great, in their own ways. But, I have to say that Tim Curry tips the scales a bit. He's just so nasty in TTM, it's such fun.

Gory stories, we do that. And your host, a talking rat.

reply

The 1993 Three Musketeer's was just a little bit too cutesie poo, especially in the scenes with Charlie Sheen (long before it was revealed what a cad he is) and Chris O'Donnell (who is laughable as D'Artagnan). The producers of TTM tried too hard to make it hip for MTV style audiences.

Gabriel Byrne, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich and Gerard Depardieu are like a dream team of actors. Of the four, Gabriel Byrne shines the brightest as D'Artagnan in The Man in the Iron Mask. Jeremy Irons wasn't given enough to do and Gerard Depardieu comes across clunky and wooden, the way he always does.

From the Three Musketeers, Oliver Platt makes a surprisingly good Musketeer (I forget which one he was) and Tim Curry was brilliant as Cardinal Richelieu. But "Iron Mask" is a better movie overall.

reply

93 chris odonnel was every bit the star leo was.

Sheen and sutherland and curry had way more marquee value than byrne, depardu, and irons. Only malcovich is the real x-factor here.

I would say they are equal- not to mention J. Irons and Gérard Depardieu have a lot more experience than K. Sutherland or Charlie Sheen.
