Maybe this has been answered on another thread and I appologize if so, but why didn't Leo DiCaprio do a French accent for this film? I mean, it was set in France and he was King Louise the XIV. Was there some histroical reason? It completely took me out of the film while watching it. Thanks

Seriously though, as much as I detest American accents in historical dramas, sometimes they work (i.e. Kevin Costner in Prince of Thieves). I have zero issue with any of the accents used here. The actors did well enough to earn a pass.

And while we are being accurate, shouldn't they all be speaking French? But I do agree that the different accents are a bit odd...

Uh, I'm not sure if an English speaking actor with a French accent would be any more accurate than the flat-out American English spoken by Little Leo but I understand the reason for your discomfort. There is not, however, any way to market a film to a primarily American audience if the actors are speaking French.
shareSometimes actors choose not to do an accent because it's bad. Costner didn't do a British accent for Prince of thieves because he tried it once and it didn't work. He decided not to do the accent and use his regular accent bevy of an actor does an accent poorly it distracts from the story making it bad acting. Not doing an accent means you want to do well with your character. Leo is really good in this movie accent or none. And Jeremy irons has an English accent while he's a character from France. So is he doing a poor job because he's not using a French accent.
Gabriel Byrne also happens to be Irish and his accent is undermined by what appears to be a French accent he was attempting to use.
