Why do they sound American when they are meant be French?

I like this movie but one thing that annoys me is that they speak with American accents. Like why can't they speak with French accents? I think Leo is a great actor but they way he talks in this movie is just distracting.

.......because obviously they don't speak French in France, they speak English with a French accent.

same reason why in Roman movies they speak with English accents, but no one makes a stink out of it.

Only Americans Leo, John Malkovich and Peter Sarsgaard spoke with their own accents.

Jeremy Irons spoke with his own accent, as did Gerard Depardieu. Only Irish actor Gabriel Brynes put on a French accent.

Nobody sounded American, except the only 3 Americans.

One of which is to pass as the KING of the country (with his American accent).
I do appreciate movies that are (as close as possible) 100% authentic. But it didn't particularly bother me. It's basically the elephant in the room and we all just accept it. And it's main target audience is probably America. We don't like- and some probably incapable- to read captions.

Was Byrnes putting on a French accent? It sounded more like was trying to do a slight Scottish accent.

For some films like "Amadeus" the director will choose to have the actors not focus on the accent. This allows more liberties with acting, instead of worrying about how good the accent is
