Jane Austen's????

They must have been mad... I mean, it is funny actually, and I can't believe they were actually allowed to put Jane Austen's name on it.

It's a parody of Mario Puzo.

The title was making fun of all of the Jane Austen books that were being made into movies around that time.

i too came here specifically to find out the reason, if any, for the makers of this film putting Jane Austen's literarily revered name in the title. i still don't know the answer. if any. is it because the movie is shrill, silly and, well, stupid? and Jane Austen's novels are, uh, NOT??

whatever the reason...it fails on the basic and incredibly important level of being funny...so, well...too bad?

There was no reason other than the one I have stated. So many movies being made at that time were entitled "Jane Austen's" or stated her name somewhere in the title. The movie was a spoof, not of Jane Austen, but of one movie in particular (The Godfather), and movies in general, so the producers just tacked on Jane Austen. "Mafia' was shrill, silly, and stupid. It was a parody and was meant to be. Everyone's tastes are different. There is nothing further to say.

There was also Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelly's Frankenstein that came out in the 90s.
